Student allowed to bring religious knife to class

A few weeks ago at Auburn's Gildo Rey Elementary, a Sikh family approached the school telling them their little boy would be carrying a Kirpan every day.

District administrators are citing state and federal guidelines that allow certain exceptions to Washington's "zero tolerance" for weapons policy.

They say there are plenty of Sikhs, both students and staff, who have carried Kirpans to school for years without incident.

Interesting.

A Pop Tart shaped like a gun will earn a suspension, but a blade is OK because religion.

It's a ceremonial blade, true? I wonder if there is religious doctrine that says it must be sharp and pointy? Blunting edges and points might make this less problematic.

The pop tart earned a kid a suspension because of some messed up rules. I haven't heard of any kirpan problems since kids were allowed to wear them to school. As far as I know some schools in NY allow them as long as they are glued into the scabbard.

Not really. it's the shape (the map is the territory), just like gun shaped pastrygoods.

Just seal the Kirpan. It's been the compromise in several places, including New York.

A completely different school in a completely different district in a completely different city in a completely different state means you don't actually have the point you thought you did.

Someone needs to create a religion where carrying lit sticks of dynamite to school is essential.

There was a case locally of a kid getting suspended for wearing a traditional Scottish knife as part of a full Scottish outfit.
To a dance.

He could have brought another traditional Scots item:

Yes, but "this" Claymore has no sharpe edges. The Claymore sword is a real mans weapon
designed to cleave bodies in twain, and an early version of the kinetic energy weapon.
There is a very nice collection in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge UK, with examples
1.6 m in length!
The Kirpan is for kids!

In the OP article, they say the TSA doesn't allow them on airplanes. So how do Sikhs manage that?
