Why?

It sounds like you don't need to be worried about the rats.
 
I'm not worried about the rats, I'm worried about my dogs trying to get the snake.

(My dogs would make a pretty handy meal for most snakes).

In my case, much less grubbing around amongst the leaves and weeds on my hands and knees.

I did hear an unsettling hiss from the yard yesterday as I brought the dogs back from a walk, but I associate hissing with lizards around here.

This makes me wonder if a sleepy or a blue tongue would eat a rat.

We have wild (feral) horses.

If you went for native animals, then yes, it's the kangaroo, and for the reasons you give. If you were to come visit me in Canberra, I absolutely guarantee that the first kangaroo you see will be dead on the side of the road.

Yeah, don't let your dogs get the habit of hunting down snakes.

My step-mother had a cat that was a snake killer. She said "Only one way a cat like that ends".

I used to go horseriding on a property with friends. Occasionally a small terrier that lived in the next property would tag along, and they'd occasionally go suddenly darting into the brush and absolutely wreck the hell out of a snake. That dog was a great snake killer.

One day it stopped coming. Never saw it again.
 
Meanwhile, in beautiful downtown Adelaide, it was 43C today, and the weather report contained warnings for flash-flooding tomorrow.

So, we're expecting 36 degrees and torrential rain.

One weather guy mentioned that it will be a little humid tomorrow.

I'm guessing 100% given the rain!

One of our cats once found where the garter snakes were denned up for the winter. He'd bring in five or six a day. Alive. We got to being very careful about opening the door for him.

We're getting that rain on Sunday. Hopefully. The BOM is still forecasting 60% chance of showers, and probable thunderstorm.

My dogs ripped a pregnant one in half. So weird, there are these little nodules like what you see when you open a pea pod. I did not dissect them. :eek:

When I see them in the yard, I chase them into the bushes before the dogs see them.

Yeah, dogs and snakes, not the best combination, especially the little tackers like mine.

Meanwhile, it's six am, and 22C, with 95% humidity.

I went outside to see if the temperature had dropped, and was rewarded with the sight of all the little geckos running around catching insects.
