StopSylviaBrowne - Montel: Outburst in Savannah

Another good article, Robert! I haven't read all the way through the previous thread on this, but has anyone mentioned the military connection the young intern's father or grandfather (I can't remember which) had with Montel Williams? There was an article around the time this story broke where it was reported that the young intern had not only been frightened enough to file a police report, but that either her father or grandfather had been in the military with Montel Williams and had spoken so highly of Montel Williams, this girl was doubly shocked by his behavior. I have no idea where I read that or I would gladly post the link. It reminds me of Hal's open letter to Montel - another situation where he was assumed to have integrity and character based on his military history, only to disappoint.

Last-minute update: according to this story on FoxNews.com, Williams has asked the intern to appear on his show to receive a public apology. If that happens, it will be added to this article.

If that happens, it will be a miracle.

I teach my students tha a real apology consists of these parts, and in the stated order:

1) A complete and truthful confession of the event(s) in question.
2) A declaration of responsibility for the actions, without any subjunctive clauses.
3) A sincere expression of regret.
4) A request for forgiveness.
5) An offer of restitution, which should not be offerred as a reward for being forgiven.

At no time should the person offer an excuse, or provide circumstances that would mitigate the offense. The apology must fit the offense, without placing any blame on the victim.

Such as:

"I harrassed you and threatened you. It was my choice to do so, and I claim sole responsibility for my actions. I am sorry for what I did to you, and I truly regret it. Please forgive me."

Then, no matter what the offended party says:

"Please accept my offer of ________. I know this won't change what happened, but I offer it in good faith."

How long can you hold your breath? ;)

Excellent article. I agree with everything you said but what about Montel's despicable treatment of the people who appear on his show to talk to SB? Joking about their problems, yelling at them when they won't validate what Sylvia's said, treating them so rudely and dismissively?

He's so, well, "Montel" when the cameras are rolling, all pretending to be respectful and caring, but when he knows something is going to be edited out he's worse than she is. It's shocking how he treats the studio audience when he doesn't have to be nice to them.

Another good article, Robert!
Thanks, ExM!

No, I was not aware of that, but will look for the article. Thanks for bringing it up!

We'll have to see. Great breakdown of an apoogy, by the way.

Excellent article.
Thanks, Eeney!

If you'd care to send me an email outlining your experience with this in a couple of sentences, I will consider adding it to the article. Thanks!

If his lawyers are any good it should happen soon and it should seem to be from the heart. I'm sure they are all in panic mode because this could cost him millions and he could be prosecuted. My guess is it will be soon be settled with the signing of a check that has 6 zeros.
