Heaven forbid that babies in garbage cans should have their constitutional rights violated by being forced to buy health insurance.

Should there be a special exemption for them?
 
After Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) said that health insurance counts as interstate commerce and therefore falls under the Congress's constitutional powers, King argued that there are people who never even use health care -- and therefore a law requiring them to buy insurance is unconstitutional

Except for the fact that the gas tax comes no where close to paying for roads and therefore those who don't drive are taxed unconstitutionally.

OK, I'll play along. . .

Contrary to popular belief, the individual mandate doesn't say you have to buy insurance. It says you have to have minimum essential coverage. An abandoned infant would automatically be covered by medicaid and would therefore satisfy the mandate.

However, the individual mandate only affects people who pay income tax. There is also a financial hardship exemption.

Any way you look at it, it's an absurd argument (which I'm guessing is what the OP was really saying).
 
The OP is actually quoting a sitting member of Congress. Ostensibly to make fun of him.
 
Yup--and King is trying to argue that not everyone subject to the individual mandate has already participated in the regulated economic activity (that is, participated in the healthcare system).

But he's wrong.

On a tangent: isn't this the same guy who introduced the bill to deny citizenship to babies born in the U.S. to parents in the country illegally? What is his obsession with childbirth lately?

Again, and I'm not linking it again (I did it in another thread), King was the only vote in the House of Representatives to oppose a commemoration of slave labor that helped build the Capitol.
 
I used to boast about Iowa, but lately there is little to boast about. To the contrary, there is a lot of news lately from Iowa that is downright disgraceful. Steve King is one of the biggest embarrassments to the State.

Suffice it to say that his discussion about the Interstate Commerce Clause demonstrates that he has not done his homework about the meaning and effect of the Clause.

Imagine you're watching a carpenter to make an item, and you see him pounding nails into wood with a screwdriver. Or you see him trying to apply stain with a wrench. You might conclude that at the very least this person does not know how to use the tools of his trade, and more likely, he is an ignorant buffoon.

Well, the Commerce Clause is one of every congressperson's tools of the trade, and Steve King clearly does not understand it.
