Stephen Baldwin, Porn Crusader

UPPER GRANDVIEW — Actor Stephen Baldwin, who in recent months has fought to keep an adult video and bookstore from opening in Nyack, has put his 19th-century Victorian home on the market for $3.4 million.

Baldwin put his 1.3-acre Old Mountain Road estate up for sale almost three weeks ago, said Martha Woodhouse, a real estate agent for Prudential Rand, who is handling the sale.

Woodhouse said the Baldwins were not moving because of the shop; rather he and his wife, Kennya, were seeking more property to keep horses.

"He wants a house just like his but with more land," Woodhouse said yesterday. "He's very interested in horses, and he would like to have property for more privacy. He will still be involved in everything in Rockland that he's involved in now. His church is in Nyack, his kids' activities are here, he has offices in the Nyack area."

OK, there's upscale wine bars and there are biker bars. There's the bathroom in the Ritz-Carlton and there's the bathroom at the bus station. And here there's peep show booths and there's Blockbuster but with x-rated videos. There's differences, Tmy. Real ones. I've already said that I'm all for porn stores; indeed, I've said that there are at least nine within a few blocks of me. But I'm also for being factual and not dressing things up. Not all porn stores are the same and the ones with peep booths are at the bottom of the barrel.

Not quite, manny. the ones with peep booths and glory holes are the bottom of the barrel.

Baldwin's not condeming this porn store for being a wretched hive of scum and villainy, but just for being a porn store. They could have gilded marble columns, and cater to the weathliest class, and he'd still have a problem with it.

I'm gonna have to agree with Jas on the bit about 'presentation'. In Reno they have a couple of adult bookstores, one is seedy and grungy and I indeed wouldn't want to live near it. The other is nice, well maintained and looks like just about any store one would find in a mini-mall. That one, I wouldn't mind.

Further, I live only a few miles from a whole bunch of brothels. I don't think they bring down the neighborhoods they are in, though admittedly they are in rural areas to begin with.

What strikes me is the irony of someone who makes his living in the entertainment industry trashing something that is just another segment of the entertainment industry. Maybe the owners of the porn shop don't like the idea of actors living in their neighborhood. Perhaps they should publish a list of the names of everyone who goes in and out of Steven Baldwin's house.

Is this the same Baldwin brother who did that borderline homoerotic porn scene in that awful Mario van Peebles movie (redundancy I know) Posse, where they all get naked and go swimming in the Old West? It may have been William Baldwin.
