CNN's reporting on their website that the House has passed the bill for public funding of stem cell research despite Bush's vow to veto it.

The full details aren't available yet, but I still say, "WHOO!"

Before anybody gets too excited, from the CNN article referenced above:

The vote was 238-194, short of the two-thirds supermajority necessary to override a veto.

And Bush has said he will veto it, so even if the Senate passes it, nothing will come of it.

Wow! Bush will actually use his veto for the very first time ever? And here I thought he was going for a record.

I have a better idea Georgie. Instead of vetoing the bill, let it pass. Express your outrage, and flaunt your morale superiority, but let the heathens go ahead with stem cell research.

Meanwhile, you and your religous right cronies can pray for our souls, secure in the knowledge that you will go to heaven because you don't approve of the immorality of such horrible acts of murder.

Oh, and by the way. If stem cell research does ever end up curing disease, we all know you'll choose to die instead of reaping the benefits of such treatments.

I'm afraid this is how it's going to work out in the future :

The West will ban stem cell research and feel morally superior. Asia will go ahead and do all the research, and discover quite a few amazing things, including the cure to a lot of terrible diseases. The West will then participate in reaping all the benefits.

I hate to sound cynical, but I think that as soon as people realize the sheer tons of money that can be got out of this technology, a great many politicians will rethink their moral positions and find themselves not opposed to it after all.

Yes, we'll see how many of these holier than thou types who want to dictate morality to the rest of us will forgo stem cell treatments.

So I guess you won't mind funding the 8 billion dollar (+350 million / year operating expenses) from the passage of prop 71 in California as well as the increased federal load for a technology (embryonic stem cell research) that has yet to yield any results?

Menawhile, it seems there has been progress made with adult stem cells:

Future of Stem Cell Research: Rapid Progress

Perhaps you should say "WHOA" instead of "WHOO"?

Rome wasn't built in a day. Or is this "hasn't yielding any results yet" argument simply a way to support Bush without looking like a fundie who opposes embryonic stem cell research because it's supposedly "murder."

Fantastic. I hope research continues on all types of stem cells.
Or should we give up on embryonic stem cell research simply because results haven't been fast and effective enough for you?

.. that has yet to yield any results?

It's hard to get results from experiments if the experiments aren't being done, Pepto. There is a scientific basis for researching embrionic stem-cell research that is based on evidence and what scientists already know, unlike prayer effectiveness studies.

Also, there are results, just not in the USA where the research is being handicapped by the fundie right.

Has anyone else noticed that the same people who are now saying that there has been no significant development in embryonic stem cell research are the same ones who have been hindering that research every step of the way?
