lol They're having to go to such extreme lengths to bypass spam filters that it's getting hard to tell what exactly they're hawking anymore! I usually get a few lines of (I think) Dickens.

Ok then...

What about this great job offer from a GENUINE USA based company...

How about adding a grammar checker to the spam filter or would that increase the CPU load too much?

I've been getting 5 or 6 spam messages every day that have just 2 lines. The first line says something about investing, the second line is a link to an investing web site. Each spam has a link to a different company. When I contact these companies asking to be taken off their spam list, they have all said, and this is at least 20 different companies, that they didn't send out the emails and they don't know where they are coming from

What's the deal? If the companies they are advertising don't know about the spam what is in it for the spammers?

Are these legitimate companies? I make it a habit NOT to respond to any spam, that just confirms your email address is valid, and opens the possible floodgates for MORE spam.

In fact, even opening an incoming spammed email may activate embedded html which verifies your email address as valid and active. You'll just end up getting even more spam.

The text is just a dodge to beat spam filters. If you were using a lame e-mail client like Outlook you would see nothing but a picture. The picture is superimposed over the text.

Of course this doesn't take into account the fact that most spammers are incompetent fools who have purchased spam services from a scammer and may not have programmed the spam-bot correctly.

Uhm... yeah... don't run e mail embedded HTML.

I love this idea that 'opening' a message will cause something to happen to my computer. An e mail is just text. What your computer does with it is your business.

<major bitch alert!>
Speaking of which, you should see this one I got off from Lycos after I contacted them about the amount of spam I was recieving from an adress I was convinced were dead a couple of years back:
I've removed my real name/email addy for privacy.

from lycos.com's "help" desk:
Dear,

Unfortunately, you cannot disable MailCity. As part of our deal with
them, we are required to continue forwarding any mail until 2008.

We suggest you set up a spam filter, to weed out your junkmail.

Sincerely,

(NAme removed to protect idiots privacy"

Comments:

As I've noticed I still recieve mail posted towards my old mailcity
adress (**** before the merger of the two services)
and these mails seems to be responsible for the largest part of my spam
problem, how do I go about disabling the redirecting of these mails as I
no longer have any use for that adress?
May I also suggest that you make this question a part of your FAQ as I
doubt I'm the only one with this problem.
First of all, let it hereby be known that I HATE being called "Dear" by someone I don't know. Particulary when these idiots doesn't have enough brains to use my name after that particular "endearment". Now this time of month it MAY be my hormones, but I finding it condecending.

Second, the entire answer pretty much sums up to: "We are not going to help you, you just have to bite the bullet for the next 2 years.".
And they call themselves a "HELP" disk!

Did I mention the spam filter has a limit of 99 adresses in the block list and that I recieve approximately that amount of spam from various different adresses in a week?

Then there's the automatic junk filter, which, if set to maximum, is "kind" enough to determine that even some of my serious mail is "spam" which doesn't exactly help as I have to sort through the junk in my spam-folder just to make sure nothing important goes up missing. And the middle filter level is woefully inadiquate (thats the setting I'm currently running).

The Personal filters don't allow me to send mails send to xxxx@mailcity.com directly to the junker and the list goes on and on and on....
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Thank Deities for G-Mail. I'm using that for the REALLY important stuff like JREF, Buisness and those few people I trust with an email adress I'm not junking soon.

Moral? Stay away from lycos.

PS: Rule of Thumb: If an email have an attachment of any kind and is from someone you don't know send it directly to the trash. You never know what it contains of little "Surprises".....

ETA: discovered that my email were hidden in the link....
ETA2: And there goes the ipnumber....Interesting how much information they retrieve when they put one of these little "help" forms online, isn't it? Makes me wonder what they use all that info for...

I think they're going to have a hard time finding people with "24 hours of free time every day."

Actually, the new Outlook blocks all images, unless the address is allowed in your settings or you right click the message and choose "show images". Also, it's default setting has done a pretty good job of identifying junk mail.

You comment was true for Outlook 3 years ago, but they have markedly improved in XP and 2003.
