We are familiar with many claims of people reporting noises that sounded "like explosions" and similar. I just managed to find this and found it incredibly interesting.

Unbeknownst to rescuers, when the hoist and governor cables of one of the elevators had been severed, ropes to other cars had been weakened. Nevertheless, the elevators had to be used to transport those severely injured, including Betty Lou Oliver. As the plane hit, Oliver, an elevator operator, was blown out of her post on the 80th floor and badly burned. After receiving first aid, she was put in another car to go down to an ambulance. As the elevator doors closed, rescue workers heard what sounded like a gunshot but what was, in fact, the snapping of elevator cables weakened by the crash. The car with Oliver inside, now at the 75th floor, plunged to the sub-basement, a fall of over 1,000 feet. Rescuers had to cut a hole in the car to get to the badly injured elevator operator.

That quote is regarding the 1945 crash of a B25 into the Empire State Building.

So I pose a question to everyone who believes that noises inside the WTC's were explosive devices.

Does this mean that there were explosive charges going off inside the Empire State Building?

Great find!

Many many things would be happening inside the towers such as small explosions from the kitchens and maybe some computers frazzling. It could have easily been mistaken for a 'bomb'.
 
Any commercial plastic bottles of water or carbonated drinks, when heated sufficiently, will explode with a noise like a small hand-grenade. Ditto, I expect for drinks in aluminium cans (inside vending machines?).

Even the CPU of a computer explodes under heat. Obviously not as loud as a shape charge - but it is a non-ordinance explosion none the less. Imagine what else could have been going off.

Think about it this way - we know that elevator cables snapping are comparable to gunshots. So what would bolts snapping and elevators falling sound like (inevitable if the cables snapped)? One hell of a lot louder.
 
Things that EXPLODE with heat.

Things that could be mistaken for Explosions:

Walls collapsing
Floors Collapsing
Elevator wire snapping.
Elevators hitting ground after falling.
Windows blowing out (their "squibs") from compressed air.

I am sure this list could become quite extensive.

Not a bad start, Tam. I think you can expand that list safely with:

- Monitors of any kind (Tv and Computers, the later of which there were many in the WTC)
- Any kind of canisters under pressure including Fire extinguishers.
- Concrete craking/exploding due to fire/hear and/or pressure.
 
Equipment components of a pressurized hydraulic system have a long history of making huge Kapows (think old Batman TV series) in stressed conditions. Boilers, Chillers and their associated pumps. You'd be surprised at how much damage these items can create. I've seen a few cases where equipment pieces have been blasted more then a mile away. Some other items, which may or may not have been in the WTC towers;

DC battery plants.
Diesel fuel day tanks for the emergency generator systems.
Equipment serviced by natural gas.
 
any computer will have dozens of capacitors that can easily explode

any office will also have UPS batteries (a 1-2 workstation UPS is essentially a 50 pound lead-acid battery) offices with a server clusters will have exceptionally large batteries (server PSUs will have larger capacitors)

in-line surge suppressors and UPS can also explode with a good deal of force

But I would have to argue that the crane was brought down using bombs to cover up 9/11. Just use some common sense. Cranes can't fall down outside Controlled Demolition. Duh..

My favorite is this one.

The blaze was still raging out of control in the early hours of Sunday, having breached a fire wall on the 17th floor and reached almost to street level. Explosions could be heard within the building and authorities cordoned off a zone some 500 metres in diameter in case it should collapse.

Although nothing to do with buildings and fires, taken out of context these quotes could easily be describing explosions.
I thought maybe a tanker had exploded or a plane had crashed.
