Does anybody know about allegations of criminality against Sotomayor, by Dr. Richard Cordero? I've scarcely looked at this, and have no idea about whether it's some politically motivated fraud or not. However, the Cordero guy is claiming impressive credentials, viz.,

Ph.D., University of Cambridge, England 59 Crescent Street
M.B.A., University of Michigan Business School Brooklyn, NY 11208‐1515
D.E.A., La Sorbonne, Paris

If those really are his credentials (and he really exists :) ), it seems unlikely that he would put his reputation in jeopardy just for the sake of politics.

From GOP SENATORS IGNORE SOTOMAYOR'S CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES

Dr. Cordero is a member of the bar of the State of New York. For the past 5 years he has been involved in 11 federal bankruptcy cases, which he has appealed from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, WBNY, to the U.S. District Court, WDNY, to the Court of Appeals, CA2, and to the Supreme Court of the United States.

It is because of his cases in the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts that he discovered certain judges are above the law because no one is stopping them. Dr. Cordero plainly and without apology states that Sonia Sotomayor has been a willing participant in a cover-up in concealing assets as part of a judicially run and tolerated bankruptcy fraud scheme. She also lied on the required documentation submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Cordero's 234 page "Statement of Fact" is here.

It is (a politically motivated fraud). Look at the web site hosting it. It's obviously an escapee from the St. Agnes' Home for Insane Graphic Designers. Read the other articles that keep it company, and it's obviously the product of a deranged and politically desperate mind.

For that matter, skim the "statement of fact" itself. "The pattern of wrongful acts in support of a bankruptcy fraud scheme began with Judge Ninfo’s summary dismissal of Dr. Cordero’s crossclaims against Trustee Kenneth Gordon in Pfuntner v. Tr. Gordon et al." If this "statement of facts" bears any resemblance to the way he writes "statement of facts" for his law briefs, then he's a lousy lawyer, and the judge called him up sharply for it. As a result, he's decided to go on a witch-hunt.

The whole "statement" is basically a "waaaaah! I lost a case!" whine.

And like any sore loser, he simply can't give it up.

If his current accusations against Judge Sotomayor aren't politically motivated, I would have thought some misconduct by her would have been mentioned in that big old "Statement of Facts."

Next thing you know, some wingnuts will start to claim that Sotomayor isn't a U.S. citizen

Sotomayor's name appears just once in this document, in his Great Big Appendix of all the people who he feels have done him wrong and therefore belong to the Great Big Conspiracy. This list includes literally dozens of judges, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg and former Chief Justice William Rehnquist, so Sotomayor seems to be in excellent company. His list also includes former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, the U.S. Department of Justice (yes, all of it) and the FBI.

It is just possible that they are all involved in some crooked scheme against him, but it's also possible that he's a nut with a grievance.

If you mean the "news with views / devvy" web site, this is a really lame 'argument', since (AFAIK) Devvy Kidd has nothing directly to do with Cordero. And if you mean Cordero's web site, judicial-discipline-reform.org, I don't see any articles, though I do see some links. What, exactly, are you referring to as the work of "a deranged and politcally desperate mind"?

Shall I assume that you are a lawyer? If not, what are you qualifications to make this statement? Also, please quote where the judge "called him up sharply for it".

I take it this is your theory. Based on merely what you've written, here, I have a hard time taking you seriously. I listened to him interviewed after making the original post, and he didn't seem anger, hate, or revenge-filled, at all. He also seemed more concerned about the courts as a system (and as systemically corrupt), rather than revenge against an individual.

In short, I think you're just making up crap.

Oh, another "i dont know, im just asking questions"-thread.

Those sites - NWV and that crazy womans - are just filled over the top with paranoia. Seems like every conspiracy theory and pseudoscientific idea in the world is covered. Couldnt find even one reasonabe thought.

If im going to be interested, the source will have to be a bit more sane.

Cordero's letter to the Judiciary Committe re Sotomayor, specifically, is here. She is mentioned 130 times.

Right, that's fine. I understand he's complaining about her now. I'm just saying it's suspicious that he spent 234 long-winded pages complaining about judges three years ago, and all she got was a name-check in the appendix, indicating nothing other than that she was a CA2 judge (not a crime, last I checked), and now that she's the nominee, suddenly he's got a lot to say about something she did... three years ago.

Compare Anita Hill - back then, Thomas's supporters would say, well, why didn't she complain when it happened, and Hill's supporters would say, well, she didn't want to raise a fuss, or whatever. And Hill's supporters thought that made sense (or pretended to), and Thomas's supporters thought it didn't (or pretended to), and that was fine. But this Cordero character doesn't have the excuse - he was complaining back then. So, I'm not saying that alone makes him a liar, I'm just saying, it reflects poorly on his credibility.

"Dr" Cordero seems like a total clown.

Ph.D., University of Cambridge, England 59 Crescent Street

Hmmm... Google maps and Navteq both tell me that there is no "Crescent Street" in Cambridge. Maybe I am to stuptid to look, maybe not.

M.B.A., University of Michigan Business School Brooklyn, NY 11208‐1515

Could not find that on Google. But a Michigan school in Brooklyn sounds fishy.

And a DEA of the "Sorbonne", which are in reality three universities will be referenced as:
Université de Paris I-Panthéon-Sorbonne, D.E.A., 1992
(taken from the CV of a real lawyer)

OP didn't check the formatting - the Crescent St. address is in Brooklyn, and it's "Dr" Cordero's address. It's supposed to be like
PhD Cambridge--------------------------------59 Crescent St.
MBA U of M ---------------------------------- Brooklyn, NY

Like it would be on the heading of a resume.

ETA: If you put your degrees on the heading of your resume, which most of us don't.

Also, as far as I can tell, his PhD is basically a law degree. American JDs aren't supposed to call ourselves "Doctor," and I kind of think he shouldn't either. Especially every. Single. Time. His name. Appears. Also, coupling "Dr" with "Esq," when the "Dr" is a law degree?

But this is nitpicking, I guess. Oh well.

I was intrigued by this (mostly because I know Cambridge well and didn't know Crescent Street, than because of the subject)

To be fair, the various PDF files like this one that I found when googling him shows the list of titles and universities on the left side of the page, and his address 59 Crescent Street, Brooklyn etc. on the right hand side of the page.

And the British Library EThOS search finds a Richard Cordero with a PhD in Law from University of Cambrdge in 1988.

ETA:linusrichard, you were faster :)

I also checked with the New York directory of attorneys, and his law degree is listed as being from Cambridge. I don't recall if it said it was a PhD, or if it said the year, but yes. And he appears to be in good standing with the New York Bar... for now. Dishonesty is an ethical violation, so it'll be interesting to see if anything happens.

Could someone sum up all the fuss about Sotomayor - or is it fair to say that any non-Republican appointee would face the same amount of attacks? After all, according to Wiki, she's an Independent, US citizen and nominated by George H.W. Bush.

Politics

Yes. Well, actually, Republican is not the issue. Any Obama appointment would face a lot of attacks from the other side of the aisle. The flip is also true. So....

Politics

Oh, okay - so no important issue at all to focus on her specifically in the media, me thinks. Thanks for your quick reply, SezMe. :)

Devvy Kidd has a succinct version. And yes, Devvy's a kook herself; she's one of the few 9-11 "Truthers" that I would classify as a conservative.

As far as I can tell, the claim seems to be that a banker could not possibly have gone bankrupt, and at some point Sotomayor handled the bankruptcy case and she didn't list it as one of the cases that came before her, which she was required to do. Should be reasonably easy to check out, but given that kooks like Devvy are pushing it I am certain there's nothing there.
