Merged Solar Eclipse 2017!

I have been looking forward to this for a long time. Being from western New York State, quite a bit of the path is about the same distance away. I'm going to wait till the day is close and strike out for the best chance of no clouds with my then 17 year old. Tennessee is now my #1 choice.

Eastern Oregon, for me, probably right near Madras. I'm about 25 miles north of Salem right now, but the weather this time of year is just too chancy here in the Willamette Valley.

I've already scheduled 2 weeks vacation for it.

Yeah, I've been working off of the premise that Denver and Casper experience similar weather patterns. Yesterday, Denver would not have been a good place to view an eclipse. :(

Well, one difference I forgot to mention is that Casper is a whole lot windier than Denver, especially in the winter, but temperature and precip are fairly close.

In Oregon, I would think you would greatly improve the chance of clear weather by getting east of the Cascades.

I will have to start planning and it will be an easy drive for me. I live in Bitterooot Valley just north in Montana. I saw the one in 1979 when I was living outside of Bozeman, Montana. It's to bad you didn't get to Wolfpoint. The science teacher there was great and I even went up to see him one time when I was a science teacher in Richey, Montana.

This time I want to do some planning for it and do it right. The last time I had to be at work. I missed all the great parties. The view I had from work was rather different. I was working for the CA ranch as a feeder. The winter ranch was down in the lower Madison a couple of miles from the buffalo jump. That year happened to be a very poor hay year and they needed to buy hay. The hay was brought in by the semi-trailer load. The easiest way to deal with the incoming load was to feed it. My view was across the Madison valley from the top of a hay load surrounded by cows.

I think I have the spot to view. Just to the west of I-15 and Mud Lake Idaho 28 goes to Salmon. Highway 28 goes in a straight line for 20 miles. About half way there is a huge power line. From the power line you can see about 50 miles both east and west. I'll have to find the exact right spot over the next few years. I go on that road several times a year. My son dances for Ballet West in Salt Lake City and we go that way when we watch him perform.

Total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 in Texas will be of longer duration.

There will be a long duration total eclipse on Aug. 12, 2045 that will just miss Denver to the south, with the center line near Colorado Springs. However, that's just 2 1/2 months beforw my 90th birthday, so I may not be alive for that one.

If I am alive and sufficiently healthy, I think I might view it from the top of Pikes Peak.

(marks August 21, 2017 on Her calendar)

I fell madly in love with the February 26, 1979 eclipse after missing the July 20, 1963 one that passed through Montreal. I still remember the dire warnings that were playing on local media in 1963: "Do not look at the sun!" IIRC, that day my dad took us to tour a TV station around the time of the eclipse but it was a grey day and the eclipse got rained out.

I think it's not very probable that I'll be able to travel to Colorado in 2045.:(

Even though I live in Colorado, It's quite probable that I will be dead before the 2045 eclipse, and it's also quite probable that, if alive, I will be unable to view it due to illness, disability or dementia. OTOH, it's not impossible that I will be able to view it, if not on top of Pikes Peak, perhaps in a more accessible location (Pikes Peak does have a road and a cog railway to the top).

Hmm, right now in Casper it is partly cloudy with a chance of precip for later. I might need a contingency plan, too, if this is a typical pattern for Casper on this date.

In 1999 we were at the total eclipse in Cornwall, England. It was overcast, but at the beginning of the eclipse a hole opened up in the clouds, and we were able to view the celestial proceedings quite satisfactorily. As the eclipse was finishing, the clouds filled in again.

The temperature dropped noticeably during the eclipse, and so I reasoned that the drop in temperature caused the clouds to condense and thereby disappear during that period of lower temperature. But I've never looked into that, or found out if that is a recognised phenomenon. Anybody know?

It was a special experience, and I'd love to see another one. It was eery as the light drained away, and a hush descended over the whole world. Also, watching the shadow rush towards us over the land was thrilling… it demonstrates how fast the planet is turning!

Is there a database online somewhere listing future eclipses? I wanna go again! :D

I just marked my calendar and will make plans to drive up to northern Georgia or South Carolina for this. Hope it doesn't rain!

I am going to be pretty lucky. Head about 4 hours north on 183 and I will be on the center line of the eclipse.

I don't know of one that is indexed by location, but the wikipedia tables aren't too difficult to scan through.

There are no total eclipses upcoming for the UK.

(Couldn't get the link to parse for that entry...)

Next best I could find were some in 2026 and 2027 that have totality in Spain.

There was an eclipse in the US when I was a child. My parents feared for our eyesight and took us to the movies.

Next US eclipse I was in Australia.

I flew to Mazatlan for the big one, 1991. At the very minute of totality the clouds completed their stretch across the sky, blocking all view of the Sun.

I will see the US eclipse in 2017! I will I will. I will not be defeated. ;)
