Merged Solar Eclipse 2017!

Here's wishing you clear skies, Fidelio.

I assume you live in Atlanta, GA? If true, you won't be in the path of totality and will need to move slightly north.

I know, it's only like a hundred miles or so but I was dead on the center line for the annular eclipse in '84.

Besides somebody has to educate and prevent the savages from sacrificing a virgin or something. ;)

And clear skies to you too friend.

I've taken the day off and can drive up a day or two before, I have a tent but not sure if I should try for a room or camping spot--any suggestions?

Don't know where you are but every single public camping spot was reserved within seconds of reservations opening in WA state. And I'm sure the private spots booked up long before that.

I am in the Springs and would be heading to Casper, unless there's somewhere else closer.

Because of its proximity to Denver, the amenities it offers, the ease of logistics and the prospect for clear skies, I've put my money on Casper. You'd be making a solid choice if you choose Casper. I'm guessing it would be about a five to six hour drive on a normal day from the Springs. Think about that. The eclipse starts at 10:22 local time and totality is around 11:43. I-25 is going to be jammed with cars for miles and miles and miles that day and it is virtually the only way in and out of Casper. There is no way you would make it in time if you drive up the day of, no way.

The hotel I'm staying at was sold out about a year ago. That's pretty much the story for the rest of Casper. You might get lucky if you make a lot of calls, but the rooms are as good as gone. eclipsecasper.com is a really good website for lodging resources, including campsites. There may even be Casperites wanting to rent space on their home lawns for last-minute campers.

If you make it to Casper and would like some company for the viewing, by all means join us. You'll be welcomed. Find the covered picnic table directly north of the new community water park in South Mike Sedar Park. My family and friends will be instructed to guide anyone who asks for Dumb All Over to me.

After all that, be ready for a very long drive home.

ETA: Have we met before, SGM?

LOL... "Escuse me... is anyone here dumb all over?" :p

I'm sitting just a hair over 100 miles south of the coastal centerline at Lincoln City.
But I don't think I'll be in this rental house in three months. :(

If I haven't settled in back down in NorCal, I'll try to be RVing around up here and hope the "coast is clear".

Or head in to the I5 corridor and Salem.

For RVers... Wally World and casino parking lots are our friends. :D

I am not sure if we have, I've been to a few TAMs so it's possible. I danced with Doubt at Rebecca's wedding.

Last time there was a partial eclipse here, I used a peg board to cast a shadow on a white board. A couple hundred little eclipses looks pretty cool, especially since it changes.

I posted about the eclipse early last year on FB and got a few snide comments in return. My brother posted about it a few weeks ago and is getting multiple positive responses. I guess my timing was off!

It looks like we are going to get the family together for a road trip from Upstate NY and VA. I would like to set up at Mammoth Cave KY and head out to wherever the skies are supposed to be clearest. If it works out, a side trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland may be possible on the way home. Getting psyched.

I thought I had responded to this thread, but apparently not.

We have a few acres in Lenoir City, TN, very close to the line of totality.

We have room for camping and maybe even a few RV's. Its on an airstrip if anyone wanted to fly in - 1,700' grass runway.

Let me know.

If anyone is curious, here's a landing and takeoff there, with a final landing back at my home base, Copperhill, TN.

Well, I committed, I paid an outrageous price for a camping spot at the fairgrounds in Madras OR. They're having Oregon Solarfest, music and other events. I can get there either Sat or Sun so I'll be able to get there without fear of being stuck in a traffic jam. Now the only risk is that 10% chance of clouds. But that's some of the best odds near here.

If anyone wants to share the camping spot, PM me. You'll need a $60 festival ticket per person, (required to get in the camping area), and there are two parking options, one $25 and you take the shuttle to get to the camp site, or a much more expensive spot in the fairgrounds.

They won't allow an extra car at the campsite. The parking offsite BTW, does allow people to sleep in their cars. The shuttle is $5/day.

If you are coming from the Seattle area, I'd be happy to carpool.

bad news - I'm going to miss it.
good news - It's because I'll be on a safari in Africa.

You all enjoy it for me.

I have but to drive about 20 minutes south from my house to be in the dead center of the path of totality. I hope it isn't cloudy.

I hope I haven't waited too long to start planning. I live about 30 minutes below Atlanta, GA. She has to work the 20th, so the earliest we can head out is about 11 PM that night. No problem there. We are used to staying up late because of work. If I have to drive a few hours late that night, that is fine.

I'm not sure where we should go. Somewhere in Tennessee or South Carolina probably. Don't have a lot to spend on some overpriced room. Hopefully we will find a way to get as close as possible to the centerline.

Any advice on a good location, etc would be appreciated.
