Merged Solar Eclipse 2017!

It's 9:31 AM here in Mesa, AZ. There's already a bite!
By 10:30 there will be a croissant or at least a banana.

I'm using the pinhole technique.

I dug out my old box of welding lenses ... according to NASA a #14 shade is fine for viewing ... I also got out a #12 incase it's a bit overcast.

Quite remarkable how much light there is when the sun is 88% concealed. Brighter than a regular cloudy Vancouver day.

We are only going to get 75% so I'm just relying on a pinhole camera and looking at the cool shadows left under our trees. Very cool. I can't capture the darkness with a camera, but it is an odd sort of overcast. From inside it looks like it is about to storm outside.

Looks like we will get totality coming right over us in 2024, so I'll try to prepare better for that.

Oregon got a good view - my eclipse glasses are popular.

We are at peak coverage here in Toronto....almost no cloud ...it's sharp enough throught the eclipse glasses

this was from Oregon

Well it's almost over here ... my eyes hurt a bit :)

I even made a big cardboard views with a #14 lens so my youngest son (he's a bit Autistic) could see it ... might be many years before he gets another chance ... he did not appreciate it .. but at least he was there :)

We had a clear blue sky here with 80% coverage. Looked weird, like it was 7 PM instead of 3 PM.

You can see the traffic right across the eclipse path on Google maps. Area of traffic is smaller than I expected.

There were enough breaks and thinness in the clouds here in Hampshire, Illinois to see the Partial Solar Eclipse, including during its greatest magnitude of 89% at 13:18 CDT. Of course I used eclipse glasses with the recommended ISO number. I've seen partial solar eclipses before, so not all that special, but the live shots of the Total Solar Eclipse on TV have been breathtaking.

I bought 30 eclipse glasses in March at less than $1 each and still have some for the 2024 APR 08 eclipse. The duration of totality in 2024 will be longer than today's and the trek for totality will be shorter: Indianapolis. I'll be 78, but I may ride a bicycle. ;)

If we miss that one, there will be one that crosses much of Chicago on 2099 SEP 14. I'll be 153, so I'll have to keep eating my Wheaties.

We had partly cloudy weather here, 98% totality (North Georgia). You could see the crecent-shapes in the shadows of trees (leaves acting like pinhole cameras). Sky got very dusky-blue, but I saw no stars (years ago, I did once run into Paul Newman, but that's another story). When I was but knee-high to a married grasshopper, we were in the line of full totality, and it got a little darker then than it did this time. That time I saw (I think) Jupiter or it might have been Venus.

OK ... not sure if anyone mentioned this .. But not one but three separate people I spoke to, in the last half hour (separately) .. when I mentioned the Eclipse and they, said something like "Oh that didn't effect us here though"

I said "Well it was a partial eclipse here it got a little bit darker out about a half hour ago"

The first two replied with a concerned something like "We were't supposed to get the special glasses though were we?"

A neighbour of mine also mentioned to me "I guess I really should have got the special glasses, but I used these instead" (she was wearing two pair of sunglasses)

MIND NOW ... none of these people looked at, or have intention to look at the sun .... they thought because of the eclipse they needed special glasses just to go out doors all day today :(

Well it's not more dangerous to look at during the eclipse. You just have to remember to not look at the sun longer than you normally would... so like a second or two.
