On this we agree. When anything over 5% of the electorate still believes birther nonsense, AGW nonsense, creationism nonsense... well, the electorate is highly suspect. Hopefully will get it right, but there is certainly no guarantee.

Neither story was really worth discussing and only the really partisan people pretended otherwise. But like it or not, there is a difference in the way the electorate approaches incumbents and challengers. The incumbent can run on his record, or he can run on the notion that the challenger is a scary person. Not surprisingly, Obama has chosen the latter course, as running on his record would be suicidal.

But challengers cannot run on the notion that the incumbent is scary, because the incumbent is familiar to us. The scary incumbent routine only mobilizes the base.
