Skepchick Party TAM9

You can always program your VHS/DVD/whatever recorder device to watch it later. Last year I did it many days in advance, and the recorder did its job wonderfully.
Oh, recording it is not the problem, there will be up to 4 copies made at home. :)
However, I've just realised I got the date wrong, and the British GP is the week before TAM this year.
Gringos are not interested in F1, so the Del Mar TV news won't spoil the fun by telling the outcome.

I'm not a gringo? Who knew? :)

Too bad. After waiting since joining I am finally able to go. Though after seeing the photos of the last two Skepchick parties I was pretty sure if there was one, I was not going.

I think I may prefer a gathering of skeptical women of an earlier generation, those of us who grew up when telephones had dials and you had to get up to turn a dial to change television channels. Many of us have children who can attend TAM (I almost brought two of mine), and some who became engineers, scientists, docter, etc when it was still unusual for women.

Seriously, there needs to be a group of us women who are old enough to know better to get together and explain that skepticism is not just for the young whipper snappers!

*Geek Goddess raises her hand*

Um, I had a dial phone, B&W TV (when I was young) and I'm an engineer...

My sons are growing up to be science/engineer types, and they had all the disadvantages of computers, cell phones, and refusal to watch mom's 'gray movies'

Ah, yes. The movies typically referred in our house as "mommy movies."

It looks like we are going to be out in force. I hope we can found a time and place to gather, plus I really like the idea of champagne and strawberries. :)

You guys do know that I am uncomfortably close to 50, right? As in...well, let's not talk about it.
Sigh.
Anyway, the skepchicks are not all young and nubile.
Some of us are old and sneaky.

Re: invite comments--
the limits to the party in the past were mostly physical--as other folks have mentioned, it quickly snowballed into a huge and unmanageable group of people. When a fire marshal gets involved, your party is too big. :(

And as I have indicated above, some people were schmucks (I can say that word, right?) and were asked to leave.

Oo! A meet up for mature ladies of a skeptical bent featuring champagne and strawberries? I am in! I can pick up a carton or three (or more) of strawberries at a local grocery store, and I am sure the Silverado Lounge can provide glasses of champagne. The biggest challenge will be to find a date and time that isn't already packed with conference stuff. Maybe a latish evening event? Thursday after the reception?

Define "mature ladies." Is it only about chronological age, or can anyone who appreciates B&W movies be involved?

(FYI- It Happened One Night is one of my favorite movies)

I think this is an excellent opportunity to create a new forum party... Relive the good old days of being thrown out of a large suite by security.

One thing that seemed to work well at TAM London were little fringe events. I think people sometimes rely too much on central organisation for things, and you end up with massive, oversubscribed events.

Pick a niche group of which you are a member, create a meet up for it, then promote it.

I'm organising a party for people that won't be there :)

This. Except for the last part. :)

I hear that they had a real problem trying to control their lothario bartender last year.
Wait, wasn't Sam the bartender last year? He seemed fully clothed at 4am when the last of us were flaking out on/near the couch with Rebecca.

Since I'd never been to London, I made use of all the fringe events I could. They were fantastic, and I met some great new people there. Sid (and others?) arranged some great events.

I don't think Vegas really has a Wellcome Trust or a Linnean Society type of place, but there's a loose amalgamation of people heading to see Penn & Teller and a bunch of people were talking about seeing the premiere of Harry Potter. There's the skydiving thread, and this Skepchick Party, and the Bacon Party, and there's always the Del Mar Crowd.

There's the atomic testing museum...

I think it is open ended.

Perhaps the simplest criteria being that a Skeptical Woman of a Certain Age be able to admit she is older, and not run away when the discussion turns to hot flashes or how she countered the sexist jokes that were supposed to demean her while in college.

Edit to add: college age women are welcome, because they are fun and will probably learn a bit. Because there is one thing I loved being an engineering student in the 1970s was listening to the women engineers who came to their own in WWII and beyond.

That would be cool - I found one thread with post-TAM plans involving Meteor Crater and Grand Canyon... a holes in the ground theme...

Collected the fringey events I'd found so far into a handy table...

I think you definitely need a forum party in there. The forum party kinda got attached to Rebecca, and turned into the skepchick party when she left the forum.

You should schedule a JREF forum party at the same time as the skepchick party (if you find out when it is!). Even if it's a small party in someone's suite, or a get together in a bar or restaurant, even if it only lasts 5 minutes. Just long enough to get some embarrassing photos and post them up here.

And just to say, pictures are important. Even if there's no time and space for a proper party this year, pictures from the party this year might help set things up for TAM 10.

I won't be there, but if anyone has an ipad, I have skype.. perhaps you could construct ipad based video conferencing bots.

Actually, I reckon the JREF could make quite a bit of cash on the side if they hired out things like these: http://www.giraff.org/

Back to the topic of "Ladies Behaving Skeptically" which is the proposed champagne and strawberries event...

...when will it fit in the schedule? Hokulele suggested Thursday after the reception, but it looks like we would be competing with Rebecca for attendees. That is not a deal breaker for me but might be for other folks. It looks like Thursday dinner before the reception is open. Should we each grab a champagne and head to the buffet for dinner avec strawberries? If the reception is as bad as last year I will need more booze that's for sure!
