Simple question re apples and bananas

One rotten apple spoils the bunch...

Oh, and as for potatoes and onions, they both like a cool, dark place, but don't store them together!

Ethylene, like anything else, will cause more of an effect if it is concentrated. Put a ripe apple in an enclosed area with unripe fruit, and the ethylene will stay put. Leave it out in the open and you will get ethylene dispersed into the whole home or whatever...not leaving much to work on the unripe fruit.

The more ethylene a plant has around it, the riper it gets...will try to look up something to explain...

To get a little more technical, ethylene triggers the creation of enzymes, which cause starches and acids to break down into sugar. They also break down cell walls, softening the fruit. Fruits ripen in order to kick-start a new growing cycle, by providing their seeds with nutrients

Thanks to all. I think I get the picture now. And my wife wins the bet. :(
