Yes, really. Clement Freud, former British MP, knight of the realm, grandson of Sigmund the psycho, and luckily deceased, has been outed as a child rapist.

With a link to the Madeleine McCann mystery.

I can recall him as being on TV when I was a kid but never took any notice of him afterwards.

His wife said sorry, so I'm presuming the evidence is pretty solid.

I think we have to be slightly careful about some of these leaps to the McCann case. In fact, we also have to be somewhat careful about simply assuming the truth of posthumous accusations.

A great shame as he had a brilliant mind ( all the other bits ) , a wonderful droll sense of humour and was an outstanding chef .
His panel game appearances are treasured memories .imo

Was thinking the same thing.

Pretty wild leap to McCann being even part of the story

He wasn't in Portugal when Madeleine McCann went missing so that seems to be a red herring.

The late 1960s, the 1970s and into the early 1980s was a terrible time to be female - abuse/paedophilia/hebephilia was almost normalised in my experience. Victims had no voice and there was no understanding of what girls were going through; it was just a laugh according to the media. The high profile abusers like Jimmy Savile were justifications for many ordinary men to continue their behaviours.

When I was at school (I turned 18 in late 1981) it was almost normal for friends' fathers/uncles or teachers to cop a feel or more, and there was nobody who listened to girls trying to say no but being overridden by adults.

Wasn't just girls

There were/are plenty of boys

I don't doubt it, cullennz, but I can only speak to my experience.

I went right off him after a couple of years of listening to "Just a Minute". I used to think he was the least imaginative and funny of the contestants and that his reputation for wit was inflated by his style of delivery - which was to speak very slowly in a richly plummy voice. It was a way of gaining time in the game, sure, but also a domination tactic. Self-deprecation was an alien concept to Clement Freud and he is reported to have been snobbish and over-bearing. Here are a couple of his amusing but unpleasant put-downs:

One to the delightful Derek Nimmo, who had just made it to the recording because of a hold-up on the Tube - CF: "Oh, tell me, what's it like down there?" And, to an Australian, "In England many men take pleasures with women beneath their social station. As it must be difficult to find anyone below the social station of an Australian, you could be missing out on a lot of fun."

Usually I give people accused of anything the benefit of every possible doubt but I am not inclined to do so with Clement Freud.

He did befriend them immediately afterwards, which is a really weird thing for a practising paedophile to do.

Fixation on the failures of psychiatry.

Yeah, about that. This:

I'm not sure what Freud has to do with modern psychiatry for that matter.

Nothing at all.

I just find it interesting that it's Siggie's grandson in the same way I find Eisenhower's granddaughter a CTist.

Or in other words you subscribe to the crackpot biblical notion of the sins of the father descending on the son unto the fourth generation. One would have to be a biblical literalist to believe that malarkey.

I begin to wonder if you are not, in fact, a bible basher despite your screen moniker.

Are you reading the same pages as me?

Where have I ever commented on Sigmund and sin? I have no opinion on him at all, because I know very little about him and he doesn't interest me enough to find out.

In fact, I'd say my prime source of information on Siggie is Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Do you understand that probably 1000 times more people alive today have heard of Sigmund than Clement?

I begin to wonder if you are not, in fact, a bible basher despite your screen moniker.

You're not the first.

Grayman quite frequently tells people I'm a Southern Baptist minister in disguise. We might need to change that since they've gone all gay-friendly.

What? Actually wouldn't he have to subscribe to the (non-existent) notion that the sins of the grandson are revisited onto his ancestors? Or something?
