If a specific genre of writings sells good, or at least generates lots of traffic on your free website packed with Google ads, one can make a good living off of it.

In that context, idiocy is not the only explanation why people write stuff that no sane person, including the writer himself, should take seriously. It can simply be a recognized business opportunity, a market niche to fill, existing demand to supply for.
