The White House has begun advising federal agencies to prepare for a government shutdown as Republican lawmakers have shown no signs of progress in negotiations to keep the government funded beyond this week.

p.s. I didn't see another thread on this, but admittedly I was searching on my phone. Mods feel free to merge.

ETA: The numbers nerds over at Metaculus already have a prediction market on how long this one will last. Personally, I think they are being overly optimistic.

Oh no! The Dreaded Shutdown! I guess we're all ******, for the thirty seconds it actually takes for some political clowns to agree on which one gets out of the car first!

Thirty seconds, thirty days, who cares? It's not like we actually need a functional government.

Yeah, **** all those federal employees who need to get paid in order to survive! Park rangers, what do they ever do? Fatcats rolling in diamonds and minks. Live minks, too.

You poor Americans! Move to Australia where Government shutdowns are never seriously considered. There is an informal agreement that budgets get passed by both houses.

It figures.

So I'm a federal employee. I've even got a work-from-home gig. It's nice.

I've got an office set up in the basement. We do multiple video calls a day. The basement has been looking a little rough so I use a false background - I just pick pretty pictures I've taken of places I've been. Usually northern Germany because northern Germany is frippen gorgeous.

But I have also been fixing up the basement to make it look presentable. New paint, some nice (second hand) book shelves, and old dresser I revarnished, a nice (also secondhand) aquarium. I got a photo given to me by former co-workers framed. It has all been progressing for months now.

So the plan for this upcoming weekend was to finish the work on the area behind me. Hang up some framed pics (of places I used to work), a few little shelves with knickknacks. Then I would (some of the time) not use the false background just so they could see the nice bookshelves and stuff behind me. I would even be pretentious and arrogant and refer to as my "study". I could look very studious in my study.

So they shut the whole damn government down just so I can't show off my effort.:mad::mad::mad:

When one Party causes a Shutdown without clear demands on how to avoid it, that's a statement that causing disruption and suffering is the goal in and of itself, not any legislation.

I blame the Democrats, because there would be no point to blame Republicans, as they are all acting like drunken teenagers.

I so want the Democrats to grow a pair and defy the House Nuttery. Challenge the bastards. It's money already authorized and spent. The Constitution doesn't say Congress controls the interest on the purse, only the purse.

Tough tiddlywinks you MAGA babies, you don't have that power your imaginary godmother gave you.

If there ever was a time the POTUS needed to pull the rug out from under these idiots before they ruin the country, this is it.

How many times has this happened in the last 20 years? And how many times has the end of the world resulted? Or meltdown of the US economy?

It's theatre for both sides.

It's indeed a red herring, usually. But there is something else brewing this time, Trump and his fascist cult, where this red herring needs to not be tolerated.

Preach it brother!

Making team members jealous of my study was the best thing about lock down.

(Well... That and my enhanced productivity for my last two years at work.)

a lot of normal people don't get paychecks. it's really ****** to do that to them, and it's not for any particular reason or greater goal that they suffer.

Really? That's quite a marked difference from the UK government. In the UK if a budget wasn't passed it would be considered a "no confidence" vote against the current government and could lead to a GE. Plus in the UK system if the budget wasn't passed it does not hinder the government from spending whatever it wants and borrowing whatever it wants.

If no budget is passed, the last one gets renewed.
this has worked for Belgium, which didn't even have a government for two years.
