Yep. I don't care that Beck is having a rally. Perhaps a poor choice of dates as he tries to don the MLK mantle but go ahead and try, Mr. Beck.

Personally, I think it was a calculated decision on Beck's part, despite what he claims, and a thoroughly bad idea. But I don't think he should be disallowed from holding his event then and there. Heck, as far as I'm concerned, let him have as much rope as he wants and more.
 
The nice thing about Freedom of Speech is that it allows the idiots to make themselves known.

I am betting that you will not see much violence on the mall...too well policied...but in the area outside the Mall when the Beckites and Sharptonites run into each other expect some fireworks.
It is going to be ironic to see Beck try to cash in on MLK's legacy with a 99% white audience.
 
I just hope that any counter-demonstration gets covered. It would help tear down the racist jerk's claim that he is about human rights. It should be clear immediately from shots of his supporters and the protestors. that he is talking about reclaiming the "rights" that old white doddards feel were taken from them.

MLK drew a following among blacks and whites because the thinking people of both races knew that segregation was wrong, and that it was partly a trick to keep working people disunited and under the capitalist/oligarchist thumb.

He's right that the version of history that Beck is selling is absolute Bunk.
But for someone who is accusing Beck of spreading fear and paranoia, his article is trying to do the same damn thing. Note the Orwell references.
And it's not like Media Matters is the fairest organization in the world in coverage of non left wing movements.

In fifty years MLK will still be honored and remembered. No will give a poop about Glenn Beck. Let him have his rally, it means nothing.

One reason why almost all GOP politicians (with the exception of Sarah Palin) are avoiding the rally is because a lot of them probably think that Beck is just in it for the money. That, and that he is batcrap crazy.
To be fair, a number of conservatives have been very critical of Beck.

but I have to say again, I thinks Beck's Mormon beliefs are really going to turn many of the hardcore fundie/evangelical christians against him.

I said that in a thread about Beck's spouting the "Native Americans are Hebrews" nonsense on his show a week ago.
I also think that his increasing claims of getting "Divine Guidence" are going to rub a lot of his fellow Mormons the wrong way, since the LDS is very cautious about anybody except the head of the church getting messages from God, the same way the Catholic Church would get upset over a layman claiming to speak Ex Catherdra....
