Should we allow the eating of dog and cat meat?

Yeah, but funnily enough, it's not because they're intelligent and have personalities, but because they're 'unclean'.

Regardless, many people do not eat pigs for ethical reasons. Whether those ethical reasons are motivated by concerns for the animals themselves, concern for one's health, or belief that there is a divine command not to eat pigs, many avoid eating pigs because they feel it is wrong to do it.

It would be interesting to discover if tastes vary by breed, and recipes are done accordingly.

My Korean friends seem to separate dogs into only two kinds "yellow dogs" and "black dogs", and prefer the taste of yellow dogs.

...

Also you totally ignored all the other animals I mentioned.

Seriously? I "ignored" your pigs and goats, as cats are the only animals of those, who many people let roam freely. At least where I live, that is, in rural Germany. Traffic is low, plus my cats are trained not to go onto the street, and they do so rarely to never. I know not one cat owner in my area, and I know a few, who keep their cats confined to the house.

It's illegal? I thought it was just socially ostracized.

Sure eating cats and dogs can be perfectly legal. I choose not to though.

It is illegal in some western countries(Germany for instance), and some parts of the U.S I think as well, while generally being taboo even in places where it isn't illegal.

Would the consequences of tolerating the eating of dog and cat meat be so terrible?

I think a big part why cat and dog meat is illegal is due to those animals not being unconscious automatons, but intelligent thinking organisms with a first-person point of view who can and will suffer being bred for slaughter.

How is this not true of cows and pigs?

That seems pretty far-fetched, I don't think it would be legal if that was true. And even if it were, no one would pay for those products, people just aren't that callous, they aren't like the sociopaths who pay to watch dogs rip each others throats out.

As long as there are health and quality standards, I'm cool with eating any non-human animal. I get that people make distinctions based on socialization and such but until an animal comes along that can give a well-informed analysis of an Adam Sandler movie script, I consider all of them fair game.

That said, my right to eat whatever animal I decide to toss on the ole grill isn't one that I'd fight for as long as there are ones available that aren't sources of great controversy amongst my fellow meat eaters (I have no great interest in what vegetarians/vegans have to say on the subject).

Are you going for Poe here? You really think cats and dogs have a special level of intelligence? And yes, pigs are quite on dog-par.

I can't really say someone is wrong if they want to eat dog..... well maybe I can.

It's just the way a dog is bred. They read humans so well. They are bred to read us. And they serve us in so many ways. Seeing eye dogs, rescue dogs, ect....... pigs don't do that.

Maybe dogs that are bred for food are different.... I don't know.

But it seems to me dogs should get a pass...... I mean.... look at all the options we have. Surely we can give mans best friend a pass for all they do for us.

Other then that. I have trouble with smarter animals... like apes or dolphins. ... I mean seriously... dolphins smile all the time..... and they jump around. We can't kill dolphins.

Pigs... pigs are largely big and ugly. We bred them so fat they can hardly move. Plus... they make bacon.... humans can't survive without bacon. I would make exceptions for pigs that look like babe... from the movies..... and the pig from Charlotte's web.

Also, you can't kill micro pigs, I mean seriously... How can you live with yourself if you ate micropig bacon?

Well that's how I feel.

What animals can be eaten and which are taboo varies from country to country and culture to culture. What's acceptable in one, is unacceptable in another.

Just look at the animosity some people show when I say one of my favorite dishes is grandma's whale steak.

And my favorite sausage to put on bread includes horse meat.

Yeah!

I love Siberian Horse, eaten that many times. Dogs are delicious - had that in Philippines, Laos, Thailand, and Burma.

The only cats I've eaten are the lynx I caught trapping. I figured why waste the meat, and they were delicious. To my surprise though, most of them had fleas, and when you skinned them the last thing you do is the nose. All the fleas would be like lemmings running off the tip of the nose, one by one... Boing! Boing! Boing!

Well I live in Korea and I've somewhat passively resisted the opportunity to eat dog, although one of my best friends from the US loves it. To me, eating sannakji seems a lot more odd, because it's still moving.

I work for the Korean government, and sometimes we get the odd random racist idiot who posts something like "why don`t you show the murdered cats & dogs your people consume believing they will become more viril or cure some illness ? Let people see the unevolved, barbaric side of south ` korean culture` STOP MURDERING DOGS & CATS FOR FOOD!!!"(actual quote) And of course every once in a while some Hollywood idiot weighs in. It only alienates the Koreans who don't eat dog meat and are themselves offended by it.

And just because I haven't tried it doesn't mean I'm against it. There are countries around the world that judge western culture for eating cows or eating pigs, and not any one of them is right or wrong.

But I do admit I dislike the aspect of eating dogs for medicinal value, which seems completely fictional.

But, pigs...

Why is that far-fetched? I am surprised you can so confidently assert the obvious intelligence and first-personness of dogs and deny it to pigs. On what basis?

Oh, because people aren't callous enough to eat dogs? Er...yes, they are. It is done in some parts of the world. In fact, humans are (or were) eaten in some parts of the world. Why are some people callous enough to eat them and yet be turned off from eating doggie when it looks up at you with those big soppy brown eyes?

So racist! It isn't just South Koreans who are barbarians, North Koreans are too. In fact, North Korea is where I sampled a bit of dog.

By "we", I mean the First World nations of the Western hemisphere, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, places where the culture is ultimately derived from Europe, and generally forbids the consumption of dogs and cats, even if only recently.

Granted, there are are a few places in Europe where people eat dogs and cats, but it is mostly restricted to poor, rural populations or very poor Roma People. It is illegal or very restricted in most European countries. However, the consumption of dog and cat meat does appear to be much more widespread and tolerated in much of east Asia, especially China, Korea and some countries of South East Asia. There are groups in these countries trying to ban it, so I realize not all east Asians eat dog or cat meat.

It seems that the main reason westerners do not eat dogs or cats is due to traditions(some of them religious - Judaism and Islam forbid the eating of dogs and cats) that designate what animals are for companionship(or in earlier times, as "work" animals), and what animals are for eating. Even people who love eating cows are often horrified over the idea of people eating dogs or cats. This seems hypocritical to me(I'm a vegetarian). Ultimately, what I am asking is why is it okay to allow the eating cows, pigs, rabbits, goats, and sheep("farm animals"), but not dogs and cats? Are there any good scientific or sociological reasons for doing so, beyond the possible health problems due to the effects of biomagnification in the flesh of carnivores(dogs, cats) as opposed to herbivores(cows)?

I am not trying to judge anyone here or persuade them to become a vegetarian. I just want to know the reasons for condemning the eating of one type of animal, but not others, and if there are good reasons for this, beyond tradition. Would the consequences of tolerating the eating of dog and cat meat be so terrible?

I believe that each person has the right to arbitrarily draw their own line as to what animals ( if any) they wish to eat. Personally, my arbitrary line is "I wouldn't eat any animal i would own as a pet.". And i hold to this, so much so that i stopped watching Man Versus Wild , due to the host needlessly killing and eating a skunk.

Now if i saw the man in person i would probably have strong words for him, but if he wants to eat a skunk, he does have the right to, ( hope the **** gets rabies, seriously. But hoping won't make it happen, so morally i feel sound.) i simply would not support him due to his choice.

If someone wanted to serve cats, or dogs, i wouldn't go into their restaurant, but i wouldn't protest it either, we are carnivores, if you can catch it, and eat it, and it isn't your species, have at 'er.

I mean, we can't draw the line at cute, some folks think chihuahuas are cute, ( honestly would order myself up a plate of chihuahua if i was in a place that served it. Wouldn't go out of my way to harm one, but if it was on the menu, i'd be the first guy to try it.) , and even though they are completely wrong, they still technically make the chihuahua an animal that can be said to be considered cute, so for any animal, someone is going to think it is cute. The best practice is to simply let folks draw their own lines, no one is going to make you eat any animal you don't want to, and your free to express your disgust at those who do, in any legal form you wish, personally i can't think of a better method of resolving the issue than this.

There was an article on here a while back in which a vegetarian stated that they were better then us (meat eaters) because they were vegetarian. While that person was a bit of a douche.... I do think they had a point. All else being equal.... the vegetarian is better.

I'll never be a vegetarian. I will not raise my kids that way..... I really can't argue that being vegetarian is far more humane.
