Should students be forced to pledge allegiance?

Crap like this comes up every other day in the Arizona Legislature, Fortunately most of it never gets anywhere.

When I was in high school back in the Sixties, I stopped doing the pledge for reason I can't remember now. There was a Jehovah's Witness girl in my homeroom. She and I would sit it out, and there was no pressure for us to participate. No, she wasn't the reason I didn't. But she did see me as game for her witness and gave me Watchtower stuff.

This was in Jacksonville, Florida, 1966, where some schools even displayed the Confederate flag. But Freedom as an actual option, as opposed to a political platitude, was always respected. (at least in my experiences)

I was pressured to recite the stupid pledge in high school. One compromise was that I could show up late. Idiot teachers. I should've contacted the ACLU and the media.

As a foreigner, the pledge of allegiance seems so, well, un-American.

We like to keep things confusing so you'll think twice before invading us.

Indeed. The different standards of evidence in civil and criminal trials related to the same act does through some foreigners for a loop.

Nah, you're not unique in that regard. That has caused some trouble here as well.

Nope. It's a form of brainwashing and has no place in schools at all. I stopped reciting it in high school.

It also loses all meaning. I had to say it through middle school and well before the end it just became this chore we did every day.
