Your facts are off. It was the staffer who abused his girlfriend. She was due in court to seek to make a temporary restraining order permanent. The troopers went to visit her to try to convince her not to. Paterson also made a phone call to the woman the night before the court date, and then she didn't show up for court.

Incredible that Paterson knew all this, knew that the NY Times was working on the story, and still last week he announced he is running for reelection.

He should resign immediately. Irredeemably corrupt.
 
Sadly, there is a precedent for what misusing state troopers for illegal purposes. Spitzer was caught using smokeys to follow Joe Bruno and other political opponents. It was over shadowed by his prostitution scandal.
 
Corrupt and stupid. He announced plans to close some state parks and parts of others despite a five to one return on investment from the local parks he wants to close.

That means for every dollar the state pays in, it makes back five. To balance the budge he wants to close them.

Stupid and corrupt. He needs to go.
 
i think he is more stupid than corrupt...but he still needs to resign.

by the way, when is Cuomo supposed to come out with his findings?

not that it matters. how do you contact someone considering pressing charges against Troopers? how stupid must one be?

he could go to prison for this.

I had held out hopes for Paterson. Certainly, the fact that some people below him had engaged in nonsense shouldn't affect him. But the fact that he called the woman the night before she was due in court - that's just indefensible. Even if he talked to her about nothing other than the New Jersey Nets, there is absolutely no way he ever should have been on the phone with her in the first place.

I imagine there's no tape of the call. In the absense of absolute concrete proof that he in no way tried to influence her to back off the charges, he needs to resign.

And, by the way, screw him and Spitzer. New York is the most legislatively gridlocked state in the country. We should be leading the nation in progressive, liberal social policy, consumer protection, education and clear-headed fiscal discipline under solid Democratic leadership. Instead, we're going to lead the nation in looking worse than South Carolina.

If Cuomo can get into office after these two knuckleheads, it will be by nothing other than the grace of God. And, since I don't believe in God, that is really saying something.

I've never been soo ashamed of our state govt. first Spitzer, then the Senate coup and a month of disgrace, and now this.

Um no. He is accused of talking to a woman about not pressing domestic violence charges against a staff member, and that members of the state police helped intimidate her. The domestic abuse was by the staff member not the police.

So given how we went from using the state police to dig up dirt on enemies to intimidate victims, any bets on when they will start performing hits for the NY governor?
 
I don't think Paterson should resign, the symbolism of a blind governor leading the state is just too good given NY's history of state political chaos. It's seems to be a deep-rooted tradition in the state going back to colonial days when the legislature didn't give their delegates authority to vote yea or nay on the Declaration of Independence so they had to abstain.

Even further back what other state had a cross dresser as a Royal Governor when it was a colony?

Albany makes Washington, DC look efficient and that's no easy trick. I live next door in CT and we're no model of efficiency or common sense, but looking to our big neighbor to the west and knowing things could be worse is something of a consolation.

As a Californian, I have to disagree with you there. I have no doubt the gridlock in The Empire State is bad, but compared to the clusterf--- that is California State government....
BUt, yeah, Paterson should have the decency to resign. Matt Murdoch he ain't......

No, there are actual empirical studies that show we're worst. In 2002, New York enacted something like 4% of all the bills it considered. That's just ... not good.

Oh, Paterson is also going to be charged with an ethics violation. He is the ONLY person in State govt. to accept free Yankees World Series tickets. he could face a $100,000 penalty.

I'm almost certain Pataki attended a few games. Is there something more to that story?
 
Pataki always reported the gifts. The Daily News used to recap the gifts by year end, and Steinbrenner's gifts always ended up in the thousands. Whenever he was asked about it, he always responded that when he went to a baseball game on Steinbrenner's dime, his conduct was viewed by thousands of fans -- and he was usually entertaining people he was courting to move their businesses to New York State -- so it was ostensibly a public function.

The stupidity of this is that if Patterson had reported the tickets like he was supposed to, nobody would have cared.
