If it was done that way, it would be quirky, and wrong.
So the newspaper got it wrong?

So the official method wasn't clearly explained even after the election?

In any case the method used is irrelevant. The fact remains that the second most preferred flag won, making the stated purpose of the voting paper a lie and the result invalid.

It is the Jack when on a ship

Yes. And it can be called a Union Jack when it is on land and it can be called a Union Jack when it appears on the national flag of a former colony.

That was my point.
The Union flag represents them, not us. But it also represents our membership in the Commonwealth, and I guess that was important enough once upon a time for some people to feel that it was necessary.

Personally, if it came to it I'd vote to keep the Australian flag as it is until such time as we left the Commonwealth, and I'd vote for that as soon as possible.

Nothing to do with the Commonwealth; it's a simple carry-over from the Dominion. Plenty of Commonwealth countries have no Jack.

Good point. I had initially thought that a majority include the Union Jack, but that's not the case.

Specifically, 16 do and 56 do not. 15 and 57 if New Zealand decides to change.

Still, I see leaving the Commonwealth as the best reason to change flag.

Why on earth would you want to leave The Commonwealth Of Nations?

I'd love to see both, but I'll take any small step available.

The fact is, while we have an arse-kissing nonce who's in love with royalty as PM, there is Buckley's chance of our status changing anytime soon, so cancelling the historical avatar of oppression off our flag will be a tiny step in the right direction.

Lol

Fair call

Because it's archaic and redundant?

There's gratitude, after all we've done for you and asked for, nor taken nothing in return.

How can a centuries-old inbred hereditary monarchy from another country not be archaic and redundant?

What's that got to do with the Commonwealth Of Nations? Sure Queen Elizabeth is the ceremonial head but she has nothing to do with how its run or what programs and services it provides.

For starters she has a lot of reserve powers. She can intervene, or be asked to intervene, at any time. This was a possibility on 11/11/75. Also if the head of state is required she could be it. The fact that she does not intervene more in Australia's affairs shows how archaic and redundant she is and how Australia should have its own head of state.

Your collective ignorance is noted. It is a good job you still have us to keep you educated.

Of course we do. the Union Flag shows the best of Britain.
You can look at it and see all the home nations represented.

The St Andrews cross representing Scotland

St Patrick's Saltire representing Northern Ireland

and the St George Cross representing England and its minor principalities.

And where, exactly, is Wales represented?

This is the cross of Dewi Sant (St David), The Patron Saint of Wales...

I don't see any yellow or black in the Union Flag/Jack (or whatever you want to call it this month). To be a true representation of the Home Nations, it should look more like this

All of what you say is valid, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the Commonwealth Of Nations. All of the things you mention there are internal Commonwealth Of Australia issues, none of which have anything to do with the Commonwealth Of Nations. Indeed most of the members of the Commonwealth Of Nations are Republics, and a couple (Malaysia and Tonga IIRC) even have their own monarchy.
