should Holocaust denial be illegal in britain

I am not involved on the topic, in case you hadn't noticed, nor did I participate in the thread drift. Trying to see if there is more meat for this bone on the original topic, which I was at one point interested in reading British opinions on.
Well, my opinion is that it should not be illegal, and I am uncomfortable with the way existing hate speech laws are worded. As far as I can tell, most British people I know of feel more or less the same way.

Of course, I wrote this before I read Wildcat daft histrionic reference to the daft histrionic Putin's Russia thread, which reference, like the thread to which it refers, misrepresents things in a way that is barely worth responding to.

Indeed. I have said that there was a good reason why post war Germany had such laws imposed as part of denazification and that it obviously wasn't the thin end of the wedge as it's been about 70 years with no additions.

Repealing such a law is different from never having it in the first place and would be politically impractical. As the only people affected are Nazis, I am not particularly bothered by that.

I also think that the German public have more knowledge and acceptance of the crimes committed by their wartime regime than the Japanese public.

It would be different for the UK.

if it weren't for their speech laws it would descend into 1930s-style fascism so these laws keep a lid on the fascism simmering just underneath the surface in the UK.
I don't know what to make of that, but thank you for the reply: I'll take another look at the Putin thread through a slightly different lens and see if it offers me new insights.

No, here is a speech on free speech, targeted at why Canada should have no such law, which is close enough... Christopher Hitchens, killing it

Where is the Putin thread?
Do a forum search using "russia" to search titles only and it should come up. As I say, though, it's barely worth responding to.

ETA: And I just searched and found that you were the last person to post to it, so you probably didn't need that advice.

I must have been looking at a different Russia thread which I was the last poster because the one I found had nothing about free speech.

ETA : Found the right one . Agree with your assessment.
