Watching some of the YouTube footage..... Fox News very quickly reported that an individual named "Booker" was involved. An Islamic convert who had been questioned by the FBI in regards to his Jihadist tendencies. They gave his Islamic name and all.....
Turns out to have been a Hispanic soldier who was in a dispute with a fellow motor-pool trooper.
When I was in the army many years ago, the "brass" was extremely paranoid about weapons being in the hands of the common soldiers. All of the "issue" weapons were very carefully controlled, at least in principal.
We had very frequent room searches for weapons and other contraband; we had to open all lockers and such and the inspecting officers or NCOs could feely go through your stuff.
Now, this was little impediment to individuals who wanted weapons of various sorts. All manner of non-firearm weapons were freely available on the German economy. Switchblade knives, brass knuckles, spring-loaded batons, straight razors... All easily available....And easily hidden or simply carried on the person. (No one was ever patted down).
One of our platoon members was involved in an incident; he was a loan shark and was convinced his "partner" was stiffing him. He simply waited till he was assigned to guard duty and was issued ammunition for his .45 pistol. When he got off shift he went to the guy's room and threatened him with the weapon. (He was almost shot dead by the duty sergeant...)
A search of his belongings after he was taken away by the MPs found several hand grenades hidden under his wall locker.
