And now for a dissenting view on this album:

"In other words, except for the first and last songs, Sgt. Pepper just doesn't rock hard enough. It's why every time "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" or "Lovely Rita" comes on the Warren's jukebox, we sigh and wish whoever it was had played Sinatra, Etta James or Delbert McClinton. Give us the White Album or Abbey Road any day."

My favorite song on Sgt. Pepper's is a surprise to most people: Within You, Without You.

I also hate She's Leaving Home. The lyrics are stupid.

Never mind Sgt. Pepper; the Beatles wouldn't 'rock hard' if you put 40,000 volts up 'em.

I always thought that the Beatles had an unparalleled career arc. From "She Loves You" to "I Am The Walrus" in four years is remarkable. Speaking of which, how the heck do you walk into the studio with "I Am The Walrus" in your head, explain to the other four (including George Martin) and make it work as brilliantly as it does? For that matter, how do you write a song like "In My Life" at the age of 25 and not make it sound trite?

Pffffft. They totally copied REO Speedwagon.

I have an intense dislike for the Beatles. To me, their voices don't sound very harmonious, and their lyrics are questionable at times.

Of course, I could be biased... When I was in high school I used to work in a restaurant. The head waiter used to play some album of the Beatles Greatest Hits... over and over and over again on the Restaurant's sound system. So it was kind of like aversion therapy.

I have a particularly fond affection for this album.
I was around 13 when I received it from some friend. I had decided I would learn English on my own and I spent countless hours listening to the record and translating the lyrics, which were fortunately printed on the sleeve, in French with the help of a small dictionnary (and months afterwards trying to figure out what the heck it could well mean).

I received no encouragements whatsoever from my parents ("you'll never learn a language that way, and that's no music anyway !") ... By the time we got English lessons at school, I was, if not fluent, so far in advance that I was dispensed to attend the course (but our Australian teacher was appalled at my accent and my references to Beatles and Rolling Stones songs or to jokes from Mad Magazine ).

.
I watched "McCartney in Red Square".... and Putin said he'd learned English from the Beatles! :)
And attended the event.. without a million body guards.

I like the Beatles, and this is my favorite album by them. That huge (HUGE!) piano note at the end of "A Day in the Life" has to be one of the coolest moments in recorded music.

Even people who don't like them at least ought to respect them for basically inventing popular music as it existed for the rest of the 20th century.

The Beatles are a powerful example of the idea that if something is really popular it's almost certain to really suck. I think they're grossly over-rated. :boxedin:

Please, please, we're all adults here. There's no reason to have to hide in the box...just because you're incredibly, horrendously, stupefyingly, if-there-was-a-"How-Could-I-Be-More-Stupid"-master's-degree-offered-at-Princeton-I-could-teach-it wrong.

But seriously, folks...

Michael

If She's Leaving Home isn't the most nauseating drivel I ever heard, I don't know what is. When I'm Sixty-Four isn't far behind. Not much use for Getting Better, With a Little Help and Lovely Rita. The rest of the songs are classics. Five crappy songs out of 12? I'm happy if an album has two great songs.

I agree with all of that.

Well said. Like lionking, I agree with all of that.
