"A series of drive-by shootings in the Californian city of Santa Barbara has left seven people dead, US police say.

The shootings took place near a student campus belonging to the University of California-Santa Barbara.

The suspected gunman is among the dead. University officials and the police issued alerts calling on people in the area to stay indoors."

If those six innocent victims had simply been armed, this would have a different outcome. All they had to do was go and take a one-day CCW course, buy a gun, spend some time on gun forums, and they would be alive today. Indeed, at the first sign of trouble, they all could have sprung into action.

[gunnutterQUOTE]But...But...It's California, see? Buncha anti-gun libruls.

[gunnutterQUOTE]But...But...The bad guy could have used a knife, a car, a pool, a gallon of bleach, a tactical toothpick, a rock, an old vacuum cleaner, a tire iron, a broken light bulb, a slingshot, a half-eaten cheese sandwich, a baseball bat, a dead possum, or any other item because it's the idiot, not the weapon!

[gunnutterQUOTE]But...But...Good thing it was a "gun free" zone, huh?

Nessie did you have an opinion on this article or were you just posting it for everyone else's enjoyment?

So basically his motive was "WHY NO SECKS I AM A NICE GUY????"

Typical MRA attitude, although thankfully the rest of them haven't backed it up with gun-crazy.

Right, that's all we need a bunch of college students, particularly eighteen year olds, whose hormones are jumping, who might be imbibing too much alcohol at any given time and whose impulse control is doubtful, running around armed. Can you imagine the number of jilted lovers, loutish jocks, jerks like the psychopath in the video or guys involved in fender-benders, all packing heat, who might lose it in a moment of emotional upheaval and start shooting?

The fact of the matter is that all the panaceas prescribed for these weird events, whether it's tougher gun controls or arming everyone simply won't prevent the deranged from acting deranged.

Why didn't he use a kitchen knife?

No, gun nuts, I'm not joyful about this. It's a tragedy, a horrible tragedy and I wish it would never have happened. But as long as you guys want to shoot guns, this will continue. I'm sure you'll all sleep well tonight.

Preemptive: by "gun-crazy", I'm not referring to gun politics, merely the act of his shooting spree. I don't know how he felt about guns; he could've bought the gun yesterday for all the difference it makes.

Yes. I do sleep well. I have learned that I cannot control what anyone else does or says, and I will not accept responsibility for anyone's actions other than my own.
"Look what you made me do" carries absolutely no weight with me.

IIRC, 12AX7 was almost certainly being sarcastic and just left off the
smiley. He is not a fan of gun carrying........

I will - if this damn kidney-stone(s) passes!!!:boggled:

I will be sad if the discussion about this incident decides to focus on the fact that he used a gun, rather than the far more contributory toxic ideology of this man.

I think it's a legitimate question. Sex is a biological imperative, so it stands to reason that those who aren't able to get it are going to become damaged in some way. I think this is a good argument for legalization of prostitution. It's a way for people who aren't attractive, for whatever reason, to get their needs met.

(Disclaimer: I shouldn't have to say this, but since it's the Internet, I do. I am NOT defending his actions at all. What I am saying is that people who have issues like this should be able to find a remedy for them. If he'd been able to find help, perhaps he wouldn't have turned into a monster like this.)

Gun control is an important topic. I'm not convinced that MRAs are. They're one of the very vocal, but very small and inconsequential communities of the Internet. Like Libertarians, or Ron Paul voters.

The citizens of California have adopted some of the strictest gun control measures in the nation. I'm not sure an affluent coastal college town in this state is a plausible hotbed of the kind of gun nuttery you seem to be blaming in your screed.

Sorry if I missed the humor. However, in response to mass shootings I invariably find some people responding by seriously saying that if everyone was packing heat things like this wouldn't happen. Of course, I also see responses that all guns should be banned, etc. The truth is that these horrible incidents are extraordinary and unpredictable. Reasonable gun control laws, such as background checks and waiting periods may well help keep guns out of the hands of some criminals and unstable people, but they aren't a panacea and will likely have no effect on mass shootings.

I don't think that's true at all. Sex may be a biological imperative; but it's rather provably not damaging to not have sex. We cannot pretend it's something like food or water that humans absolutely need to have or else Bad Things will happen to them biologically.

I feel that the "damage" this person claims to have suffered is completely figurative, and derives from the ideology that sex is something he was entitled to, and that a woman not "giving" sex constitutes a rejection or judgment of the man as somehow inferior or undeserving (as the fellow mentions in his video). Coupled with the common social construct that one isn't a "real" man until one has had sex.

Gun control is adequately handled by countless other active threads. This ideology, however, is not. I would say it stands a chance of being an important topic if it potentially led to a mass killing spree.

I was wondering if I would be able to re-kindle my interest in US gun control by posting for the first time in a while. But no. I can't be bothered, it is the same old, same old and so I will return to Holocaust denial debates. At least there headway is being made against the deniers and their idiotic arguments.

The guy seems extremely annoying.

Wow, that is the most obnoxious thing I have seen in months. He even uses lovely terms like "true gentleman" to describe himself and "brutes" to describe others.

I guess girls just aren't that much into creepy narcissistic twerps. Boy, who would've guessed? As far as I can tell he appears to be reasonably good-looking, but he probably had a host of other, uh, issues that made intimate relations problematic.

I agree that the MRA ideology probably played a role in all this. He uses their rhetoric, and has that vile, disgusting sense of entitlement and resentment so common among them. Question is: If he didn't believe women had a moral imperative to throw their bodies at him, would it have escalated to this? I doubt it, but he might very well simply have found something else to be upset about.

There are news reports saying he was the son of a Hollywood filmmaker and he had Asperger Syndrome.

Agreed. Loneliness is something many, many people experience; I know it well myself but understan that it is a result of my own actions and limitations.

The intense resentment toward women is an invention of MRAs. Because, you know. women HAVE to rub their naked bodies against any lonely man who calls himself a gentleman! It's a moral imperative!
