Not sure if this has already been posted but I stumbled onto this pic at the Discover Magazine website. It was taken in the hydrogen alpha part of the spectrum. Click on the pic for a bigger version.

[Skeptic]

Apparently it's partially cloudy on the sun right now...

[steve s]

Tomorrow should be sunny.

[Damien Evans]

Wow, and with a 90 mm scope, I am impressed!

[Ivor the Engineer]

It's a fake; I can't see any stars.

Incorrect! You can see at least one!

[Wolrab]

It isn't all washed out...they must have took the picture at night.

Absolutely stunning.

[NobbyNobbs]

What's amazing is that you got a picture of the sun in the middle of the night. Can you see through the earth?!

Whoa...

[Wolrab]

[maxwell smart]Beat you by this much![end maxwell smart]

Yeah right. Like I am going to open a page called "massive_floater".

[Ian Osborne]

The sheer scale of it all makes me feel really insignificant.

[Wowbagger]

A good candidate for desktop wallpaper.

I hadn't noticed that.

A good candidate for desktop wallpaper.

Already done.

Thanks Steve. You remind me to log on to Bad Astronomy more often.

ETA sorry, I thought it was the bad astronomy website.

[Roadtoad]

Thoroughly incredible. I notice fine art prints are available.

My wife is going to have to hide the checkbook...

[Wowbagger]

Already done.

Now think about how weird the words "desktop wallpaper" would have sounded 40 years ago.

[Skwinty]

Thanks for that! Awesome wallpaper.
