S. 659—The Human Chimera Prohibition Act of 2005

On March 17, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), introduced S. 659, the Human Chimera Prohibition Act of 2005. The bill would prohibit any person from creating, or attempting to create a human chimera. A “human chimera” is broadly defined to include various methods of mixing non-human cells into human embryos. The bill includes both civil and criminal penalties. S. 659 has no cosponsors and was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Mixing nonhuman cells into embryos? Don't they mean nonhuman DNA?

Always fun when the politicians dick with science.

Would it still be legal to mix human cells into non-human embryos?

No, they mean non-human cells with human ones. That's what makes it a chimerae. Several were successfully made a few years ago and got some notice here.

Will strickly speaking, with this law it will still be legal to mix human and non-human dna and then make a cel from it.:D

A year or two ago a Chinese clinic was successful in making chimeric embryos - mixing rabbit cells (IIRC) with human cells and watching them successfully develop. The same process has been done with other animals in other countries.

Thus the law.

I had no idea anyone mixed cells of two different species. Where the hell have I been? I'm somewhat amazed it works.

Edited to add: Well, I guess I'm not that amazed it works.

Well, if Alien Resurrection has taught me anything, you tend to end up with dozens of appallingly misshapen mutants before you perfect the process. These need to be kept alive in see through containers long after the experiment has been completed. I believe this is a standard requirement for ethical clearance.

I thought those came standard with all molecular biology labs today. You know, for the ambiance.

Another bureaucratic roadblock delaying the advent of hot catgirls. :(
