Semen withdrawal?

http://psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20021002-000009.html

:eye-poppi

So, a psychologist has concluded that the hormones in semen act as an antidepressant in women.
Anyone here know anything about endocrinology? Is this even biologically plausible? My gut feeling is that there's a confounding factor in there somewhere that they missed...but who knows? I guess it could be true?

Hehehe...."administration"...

There are some demographics involved that are not controlled for.

The ideal study would to be with two randomized pools, one using condoms, one not. With a six months baseline and then the trial, with the new data taken during the rial.

The possible factors are
-anxiety related to use of the 'pill' vs. condom
-factors associated with condom use
-factors associated with 'pill' use.

The last two are rather large and encompassing, are more isoltaed women likely to use the condom or the pill. Are people with a high set mood likely to use which one? Etc.

Okay, okay, I'll volunteer to have sex for six months, then six more.

Doesn't everybody know that sex is better without a condom? Here's why:

Semen does have hormone-like substances. They are from the prostrate, and are called Prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are used as chemical messengers, an alternative to nerves, for sending messeges between organs. It is why sex is better for the woman when condoms are not used. The PG-1 tells the uterus to have an orgasm. Therefore, better for the guy too. Now this researcher has to prove that there is a direcct emotional effect of the PG's, not just feeling better due to better sex. He also ought to study the effect on men, again to look for an emotional advantage to better sex without the condom.

I wonder if the author of that paper has ever said to anyone, "Don't worry, I promise not to administer orally . . ."

So, if feel good hormones are absorbed throught the mucous membranes, why not through oral membranes too? I've sure known some women to be 'addicted' that way... others seem to be allergic. Now I wonder what is the first stepping stone...leading to the eventual gargling?

Something besides nicotine in tobacco? Soy has phyto estrogenes, I wonder if beans will stay lit?

This is a joke right?.. Prostrate?.. prostaglandins are an alternative to nerves?.. prostaglandins 'tell' the uterus to have an orgasm?..

Could we have references please, where did this story originate? Or am I suffering humour withdrawal?

You can't possibly be serious. I've always hated sex with a condom and prefered without but that's cause it takes away from the "heat of the moment" and the latex just feels weird.

You would think the researchers who found out this "fact" would be some of the richest people on the planet. After all, they've found a chemical that gives women orgasms!

Semen telling the uterus to orgasm seems logistically unsound, doesn't it?

Wiki, re: prostagalndin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostaglandin

"These varied receptors mean that Prostaglandins thus act on a variety of cells, and have a wide variety of actions:

* cause constriction or dilatation in vascular smooth muscle cells
* cause aggregation or disaggregation of platelets
* sensitize spinal neurons to pain
* constrict smooth muscle
* regulate inflammatory mediation
* regulate calcium movement
* regulate hormone regulation
* control cell growth

Prostaglandins are potent but have a short half-life before being inactivated and excreted. Therefore, they exert only a paracrine (locally active) or autocrine (acting on the same cell from which it is synthesized) function."

See bullets #1 and 4.

The Zone diet is based on PGs as messengers, telling you to eat.

I read part of a handy manual on various mind-altering substances. It had comprehensive information on active and dangerous doses, methods of administration, general precautions etc.

Among recommendations for use on LSD, it said to not have sex while tripping unless you were absolutely sure about your relationship beforehand. You see, the author regarded it as such a strong, bonding experience that the participants would likely stick together for life afterwards.

If I'm reading your post correctly, the two of you didn't?

It was a strong bonding experience for both of us, with or without the use of psychoactives. However, in between love-making and substance ingesting, there's this thing called life and reality, and that's where our relationship ended up dissolving.

Methinks that author made the all-too-common mistake of assuming that the psychoactive experience extends beyond the confines of any particular trip. LSD users have not, despite what many of them say, discovered "another reality", they have simply temporarily altered their perceptions.

Oh come on - Wikipedia?! - where are the bullet points about prostaglandins being an alternative to nerves and telling the uterus to have an orgasm. On what do you base your statement that prostaglandins from the male ejaculate have a physiological effect on the female?

I hear you.

I'll have to see if I can find the book again. The one I saw was a late edition, and included "trip reports" sent in by people who had tried the various substances, and this advice may have come from one of those. I recall the rest of the book being quite levelheaded and not full of Tim Leary-esque prophecies or calls for political action. Written by an MD or a botanist, I forget, it really was just a manual on various garden-variety plants and fungi, aptly titled "Outlaw hallucinogens - outlaw nature".
