Yes, that's right. The arrested bombers have said as much in their public statements. They were targetting US and US ally civilians in Bali.

I may have misunderstood. But the Bali bombing in 2002 was before the Iraq invasion and before the comment about deputy sherrifs.

If they targetted us because we are an ally of the US, what could we have done to distance ourselves from the US (and bear in mind that NZ lost people in Bali too)?

Should we have not stood up for the East Timorese? Because they have made specific mention of that as a justification for the attacks.

If you think anti-US and Australian sentiment started with the Iraq invasion, then you are either ignorant or naive. The US was the 'great satan' from the time of the Iranian revolution, John Howard has based his career on total dependence on the US for security for his whole career. The 'greatest moment' of his life was the time he addressed the US joint houses of congress, when half the audience was interns and others, there just to fill the seats.
