The only thing I question about the story, is if he turned the hide and skull over to the state after taking the picture.

Any bear killed in self-defense is the property of the State, and the hide and skull must be forfeited.

Is that true? I never knew that. Of course, I've never shared land with a bear, though.

In ABP we have a guy who claims to have shot a bear in a post in which he shows us a couple of photos of a bear hide. That's far more corroboration of a claim than most of us ever post here. I don't see why you want to hold him to some higher standard.

If I may?
Pictures of bear hides don't corroborate his story any more than pictures of some guy trying to measure a fallen tree proves a Bigfoot knocked it down. He doesn't need to be held to a higher standard, just the same standard as everyone who makes claims on this forum. ABP shouldn't be given a free pass just because he's part of the "in" crowd. I would like him to explain this chest shot a little more, it sounds like a bit of northern embellishment to me. The way he tells the story it doesn't add up.

Like I said up thread, if the bear was pushing on the door when he opened it, the bear would have fallen into his house. He doesn't live in the movies, the bear isn't going to be still standing there waiting for ABP to blast him in the chest. The other interpretation of his story where we have the bear pushing on the logs above his door doesn't make sense either, black bears just aren't that big.

Black bear height.
Just for some info for everyone.

That says the picture on the left is a medium sized male, which is about 6' tall with a reach to 7'. I'm guessing the on in the piccie on the right is a couple of feet taller?

Of course not, the story is just another anecdote. But it's at least an anecdote about a plausible event: A bear tries to enter a home in Alaska, and the outdoorsy guy who lives there shoots and kills the bear. To support the story, we are provided with photos of some bear hides hanging in a log structure, a close-up of a black bear paw, and a photo of a child's hand in a bear print in the snow.

The double-standard is that I've told anecdotes here without the "pictures or it didn't happen, bro" static. In ABP's case, we've got a guy who has provided pictures - entirely plausible photos - but that's not good enough for some reason.

Shrike,
The pictures aren't good enough because they have nothing to do with the event. Your version sounds plausible, his version sounds embellished for dramatic effect. I just don't like being played for a fool.

Too bad you weren't here for the ABP shooting three brown bears at one time story. You would have been extra shrill then i'll bet.

I hope i'm not going to have to redraw this one, and replace Jodie with Nakani.

Drew,

That story I have no problem with, everything adds up all right. Grizzly bears do run as fast as a horse, they will try and steal your moose from you.. etc..he didn't claim to shoot both bears with one shot or anything.

The details of the bear on his porch story don't make sense to me so I am questioning them. If you want to believe him and try to make me look stupid for asking for answers, go ahead but that reminds me of someone who never questions people they look up to, *cough* DWA *cough*

But you haven't explained why photos of bear hides at a log cabin aren't related to a story about a bear trying to get into a log cabin. I agree that the photos are just photos and that the Internet is the Internet, but in this case those photos are a perfectly plausible outcome of the story.

For a skeptics forum I sure am taking a lot of heat for being skeptical.

Shrike,

Yes the hides are a plausible outcome but in no way corroborate the bear standing in the doorway, ABP blasting him in the chest part.

Skepticism and obstructionism are not the same thing. You claiming to be skeptical on this point is a bit like climate deniers or 9/11 truthers claiming to be skeptics. To doubt that ABP's photos support his claim is to pretty much invoke a conspiracy that he's making up stories and then digging around for photos that can somehow look like they relate to them.

I agree. Without some kind of surveillance footage of the event, that cannot be corroborated.

No I'm not denying that he shot a black bear on his porch, I'm skeptical of the dramatic way he portrayed the event.

Come on, Drew, this is just another of his BS stories, and we should call BS when he/she posts such drivel.

I think I'll call him Justin from now on, or maybe Commander.

Bears exist. Alaska exists. People who live and work in bear country in Alaska exist. There exist people who make their living by cutting trees, guiding tourists to wilderness areas, and coordinating hunts for large mammals, including bears. These people understand that when a bear decides that what it wants is in your house then it's time to kill that bear, and they have both the firepower and the gumption to do so.

I just don't see that ABP has claimed anything that would be implausible for any of the thousands of guys living in the North Woods of Alaska and across boreal Canada. Heck, there are probably several hundred of 'em who also have hot Asian wives.

Of course he could be an expert yarn-spinner and all-around bovine excrement artiste. Maybe he lives in his mom's basement in Peoria. He's posted a lot of photos, however, that seem congruent with the lifestyle he claims to enjoy. Yes, he could be a master manipulator who deftly crafts stories to weave through the photos he's found, but there comes a point at which it's a lot more parsimonious to say "Cool, that snow machine looks like it really is a workhorse" or "Hmm, that hot Asian woman in the woods might actually be his wife."

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Drew, you need to print some of these onto t-shirts.
