Section 4 of VRA struck down

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jun/25/democratic-lawmaker-hits-justice-uncle-thomas/

"A Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota criticized Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act by calling Justice Clarence Thomas “Uncle Thomas,” then saying he didn’t know “Uncle Tom” was a racist epithet.
On his Twitter account Tuesday, state Rep. Ryan Winkler called the justices’ 5-4 ruling striking down a part of the law racist, and the work of “four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas.” Justice Thomas, who is black, was one of the five justices in the majority."

Thank god there was one Democrat publicly acting like an idiot, otherwise what would the last remaining bastion of real journalism that is the Washington Times is have to write about. It is clear that he damn well knew what connotation Uncle carried.

Not much offends the left more than a minority who has left (or was never in) the fold. The outrage seems to blow their mind to the point that the racism just flows. Not a whole lot of "dog whistling" going on, just straight-up hate. "Uncle Tom" is only the second or third-most offensive slur used against black persons who dare to express conservative thought (much less many conservative thoughts!). "House ******" is another common potshot.

It's almost as if many leftists have some deep-down feelings of ownership over all minorities.

Aaaaand, it's almost as if liberals feel that black conservatives like Justice Thomas deserve to be subjected to this racist hate on a regular basis for their apostasy, thus the crickets coming from organizations which would be at Code Red were a liberal black man attacked in such a manner.

Which explains why blacks and other minorities are leaving the Democratic party in droves and flocking to the Republicans, right? The Democrats are the real racists and all the GOP's laughably inept efforts at "rebranding" to try and attract minority voters are actually working?

Yes, clearly all the real racists are liberals. The left is just overflowing with overt racism compared to the GOP. Absolutely. It's the liberals who hate the fags and furriners too. The left is just full of bigots.

Why would they flock to the Republicans? That's the party of the privileged white racists. Along with the token "Uncle Toms" and "House *******". Not too appealing.

Not really. The proposal has been in the works for some time. Perhaps you're offended that they lacked the decorum to wait until next week to point out the obvious--that the proposal will no longer have to be pre-cleared by the DOJ?

FTFA said:
Alabama lawmakers in 2011 approved a law to require Alabamians – beginning with the party primaries in June of 2014 -- to show photo identification in order to vote.
(My emphasis.) Yeah, so not really very fast at all. This law has been on the books for a couple years already.

Seriously, getting a state-issued photo ID isn't hard. Frankly the contention that black people are unable to figure out how to get a photo ID strikes me as inherently racist. Really, they can do it. It doesn't require you to be as smart as white Democrats. :boggled:

But that isn't the claim. It's that a smaller percent of black people have them and so they are the ones who would need to get them. Not a big problem if implemented correctly, but the design is to deny them votes and that's why it's always close to election time that the changes are proposed and wanted to be put in place.

Again, if the purpose or effect of such a law would be to disenfranchise minorities, such a law could be enjoined under Section 2.
Yes, but only after disenfranchisement has taken place. And won't the burden lie with the plaintiffs? Namely, that they will have to prove it took place while the defense just says "nuh uh."

Not much offends the left more than a minority who has left (or was never in) the fold. <snip>
Again, the defense from the right is moral equivalency. A false equivalency but one you have claimed. So there are a few bigots on the left. Who ever claimed otherwise. But how is that equivalent to large segments of bigotry on the right, some of which has found it into law at the state level. It's not.

WildCat, I don't think the Voter ID part is the worst. Now there will be no oversight of gerrymandering, which may well disenfranchise more people (of all colors) that Voter ID.

I would like to see congress pass the VRA again only apply it to the whole country. Gerrymandering takes place everywhere and is done on both sides of the aisle. Hell, you live in the area of one of the most ridiculous cases of gerrymandering in the whole nation.

So a year is now "too close to election time"?

I'd love to see a law passed that districts should be as square as possible dictated by population only, preferably done by computer. Right now it's dictated mainly by the interest of majority party incumbents.

Is that when the changes were to take place?

EDIT: I honestly don't know in this specific case, but it doesn't appear that anyone in this case is making the argument that black people can't get ID, so if it really is a long term ID push, then I grant you destroyed that straw man. Regardless, that isn't what this case was decided on anyway.

Yupper, Senator Elbert Guillary sure got throughly lynched here when he left the fold.

Does this mean you are dropping your other ridiculous argument? The intent is to deny votes. Same party that thinks background checks for gun purchases are too intrusive.

That's when the changes linked in post #27 take place.

I haven't heard the anti-voter ID proponents acknowledge that any form of voter ID in any time frame is acceptable.

If that's the intent they'll have no problem getting the laws struck down.

If there was legislation that only involved background checks, instead of registration, you'd have a point. As it is, all you have is a strawman of your own construction. Call him Strawdelvis.
