I normally don't have a lot of time for independent Senator, Nick Xenophon, but he is on the money here, labelling the CoS "criminal":

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/11/17/2745683.htm

The CoS has the status of a full religion here, with tax breaks and so on.

From Xenophon's speech:

"Do you want Australian tax exemptions to be supporting an organisation that coerces its followers into having abortions? Do you want to be supporting an organisation that defrauds, that blackmails, that falsely imprisons?" he asked.
"Because on the balance of evidence provided by victims of scientology you probably are."
Senator Xenophon told Parliament the Church of Scientology is a criminal organisation that hides behind its "so-called religious beliefs".

The feeble CoS comeback:

In a statement, the Church of Scientology says Senator Xenophon has abused Parliamentary privilege and is being pressured by disgruntled former members who are unreliable witnesses.

Congratulations to Xenophon for raising this, and let's hope a senate inquiry follows.

The feeble CoS comeback:

Absolutely classic!

Disgruntled former members? Check!
Witnesses are liars? Check!
Accuser under duress? Check!
Accusation inaprorpriate ("abuse of privilege")? Check!
Absolutely no answer to the content of the charges? Check!

So many tropes in so few words.

By the way, what's this "in the gun" business? Is that like under the gun?

Wait a sec... isn't Xenophon Xenu's arch nemesis from 75 m years ago? lol

Seriously though is that really his name? Xenophon??

Yep, that's really his name.
I got this nice grab from Gawker (looks like a tv rag)

"We can't imagine a more appropriately named crusader to take on Scientology in Australia—where, by the way, it has spent an extraordinary amount of resources and developed a strong foothold. We have to think that "The Rise of Xenophon" was prophesied somewhere by L. Ron Hubbard, and that his followers are rummaging through the archives as we speak searching desperately for written instructions on how to defeat him."

You know, I'm doing this sort of thing a lot lately, as well as spelling things incorrectly, forgetting names and so on. Seriously, I see the signs of early(ish) onset Alzeheimers. Must see the quack.

I second that. I have wondered recently if the COS activities migth constitute Enterprise Corruption.

http://law.onecle.com/new-york/penal/PEN0460.20_460.20.html

Any kind of statutes like that down under?

No, but it is a crime to know who committed a crime and not report the fact.
It is a crime to participate in a crime (apart from as a witness).
Money laundering is a crime.
It is a crime to have first hand knowledge about who committed a crime and not report it to the police.

So how can you be guilty of Enterprise Corruption and not be guilty of any of the above?

NB. I am not a lawyer. This post is not suitable for any purpose other than discussion on this forum.

Edit. I added a tag. Since we are discussing what the senator is saying he deserves a tag named after him. And the tag is his correct name (less titles).

Edit2. Here is his home page. http://www.nickxenophon.com.au/

Nor am I a lawyer, but it would seem to me that the criminal activates you express above in furtherance of said enterprise might constitute Enterprise Corruption. I surmise your assertion is the lacking of convictions for the above crimes in the furtherance of said enterprise that might constitute Enterprise Corruption.

There's more.

Kevin Rudd, the Australian Prime Minister, has voiced “concerns” over the Church of Scientology after a senator detailed explosive allegations about the organisation, accusing it of torture, embezzlement and coerced abortions

Asked about Senator Xenophon’s claims, Mr Rudd described them as “grave allegations”, but admitted he too had concerns about the organisation.
“Many people in Australia have real concerns about Scientology,” the Prime Minister said earlier today.
“I share some of those concerns. Let us proceed carefully and look carefully at the material he has provided before we make a decision on further parliamentary action.”

ETA: Heh. Shows how uncouth I am. It never occurred to me that the autocensor would block the French naughtypooword.

This might be an opportune time for this to appear:

"Scientology is evil; its techniques are evil; its practice is a serious threat to the community, medically, morally, and socially; and its adherents are sadly deluded and often mentally ill... (Scientology is) the world's largest organization of unqualified persons engaged in the practice of dangerous techniques which masquerade as mental therapy."

I've always thought that Arnold Schwarzenegger should have changed his name to something a little more... romantic.

Like Lance Schwarzenegger.
