Sarah Palin!

No, she is not fair game because she did not choose to be a public figure. This would be true if she were eighty. You don't attack non-combatants.

I thought the smiley

made it clear that I was using sarcasm.

Mostly it doesn't speak well of their political savvy. Hell, I have made sexist jokes, many here in these forums. (Just ask Hokulele.) But I'm not running for office. When you are a politician, you don't have the same freedom to "kid around" as you do when you are a normal person. Politicians know this when they decide to join the game.

The key to any joke is "know your audience". If your audience is the whole country, then you'd better be aware that probably anything you say is going to piss somebody off. If you don't know that, you're too stupid to hold public office.

Agreed. If you are running for high public office the rules are different and things that Joe Public can do without consequence will be fatal for you. That is just a fact of life. It is incredible how many politicians on both sides of the aisle don't realize this.
The other thing is that in a age of TV Cameras in Cell Phones, and cheap Video cams, you has better not count on being you "off stage" remarks not becoming "on stage" very quickly.

LOL. Okay. My bad. Sometimes the rolleyes smily can be aimed at yourself and sometimes at other people. But you're right, knowing your style, I should have picked up on it. I'm just not that bright.

Pretty risky choice, but at this point of the republican campaign they had no other choice but to take some risks.

With McCain running about even in the polls, I have no clue why he has to take risks? Does Obama needs to take risks too?

Nonetheless, a much more courageous VP choice than Kinnock Biden. Today I have been reading many top democrats ridiculing Palin because she is as young and inexperienced as Obama. I don't know who sets the democrat talking points, but they should be fired for incompetence.

So it's all set now.

Half black inexperienced lawyer married to a lawyer, white male running mate who is an experienced Washington insider.

Old war hero with fashion model wife, female running mate who is an inexperienced outsider.

There should be plenty to discuss in the next few months.

I hate being improper like this (I'm not going to directly link to it), and it's obvsiously? not her, but google needs to remove the questionable picture in the second row on a google image search for Sarah Palin.

In a desperate grab for Hillary's supporters, McCain just threw out his entire experience argument against Obama, called his judgement into question...and now looks desperate and confused.

This is the type of high-risk shaky play that sports teams usually make when they're psyched out and don't think they can win. It's how a collapse begins.

The headshot from when she was a beauty queen? How is that inappropriate and how do you know it's not her?

Well, this won't play well with Hillary supporters ...

Once onstage, together with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Palin talked about what women expect from women leaders; how she took charge in Alaska during a political scandal that threatened to unseat the state's entire Republican power structure, and her feelings about Sen. Hillary Clinton. (She said she felt kind of bad she couldn't support a woman, but she didn't like Clinton's "whining.")

Well, as a Canadian, I have to say that I have no advice for you what-so-ever. I have enough trouble giving myself advice on Canadian politics. :o

Well, in that case, allow me to invite you to join the "Another Minority Government" party. It doesn't matter who you vote for in your local riding, so long as you vote with the intent of creating a minority government.

Worked for me last time!

OK...looks like I was wrong, and he did stupidly say that.

He apologized, but that doesn't excuse the tasteless joke. I'm still voting for him, though.

Volokh Conspiracy reports on the reactions over at the Hillary forum (which requires registration to view):

Wow, Thanks so much to this Sarah Palin who never forgot us. She is a fighter. She paid her respects to our Hillary and Geraldine . They now no more think women in this country are 2nd class. You go girl and thank you for a refreshing pick Sen. McCain.

I am going over to John McCain's website and thank her for acknowledging the glass ceiling and our struggles. She needs to know that there are LOTS of us behind her fight.

Obama did not see that coming! I'm sure a lot of people didn't see it coming. Great job by the McCain campaign to keep things very hush hush!

McCAIN / PALIN '08

Yes, it's a self-selected group; the people who have not given up the Hillary candidacy are probably the only ones posting on her forum.

Your point? A year into her first term as governor and almost a year before she's even whispered as a potential running mate, and she should have her national policies drafted?

Really?

My State congresswoman had a position on Iraq in 2006. Everyone did.

Hell, Obama gave a speech in 2002 when he was a State senator.

And what does it say that she didn't have any national positions one year ago?

Probably mentioned here...but she's been a propenent of teaching Creationism. Also, McCain says we're in a war....this is a war-time VP? If it were to be a woman...wouldn't Rice be that pick? THis is a pander. As was said above...McCain blinked.

That is the strangest thing about this pick. McCain is all centered about national security and he picks someone who is a unknown in this area. I will just note on Fox News this evening Bill Kristol of The Weekly Standard stated his is a big fan of Palin. I wonder why?

Also, she favors Julia Louis-Dreyfus .
