Sarah Palin!

On the surface at least, she is squeaky clean, too. She falls squarely in line with the Repubs on social issues, but has a compassionate feminist streak.

She has a very compelling background and personality.

Obama and Palin seem to be ushering in an era when the biggest asset a candidate brings is a lack of dirt on their record. And the only way to get that is to go with somebody who hasn't been in the game long enough to accumulate any.

The entire country needs a shift in tone. The Limbaughs and Coulters have to be seen as railing in the dark, not supporting the apparatus right to the top.

Perhaps you missed out on January and February, where Limbaugh and Coulter spent their political capital (and then some) trying to prevent the McCain nomination? Coulter claimed that she was going to support Hillary; I don't know whether she's passed the torch to Obama or not; for some unknown reason nobody seems to be paying attention to her these days.

I don't see where this help McCain's chances. Based on what I've read so far, at the moment I can't see much upside. This could go down as one of the worst decisions in history.

The biggest issue I see is that if McCain croaks while in office, she'd be the president, with seemingly little or no credible experience of the kind necessary for the office. Could you see her as president?

If she draws just 20 or 25% of the angry Hillary supporters, that may be enough to turn the election.

I won't know who to vote for till the Europeans, Canadians, and Oliver instruct me. What a quandary.

ps Is it true she has a lifetime membership in NRA?

It is difficult to believe that women who yesterday were talking about how Hillary proved she was a substantive player on the political scene...will be bamboozled into thinking this empty pant suite is a true replacement for their dashed hopes in Hillary as the first women president....

That's true. On further reflection, the charges of inexperience leveled at Obama have mostly been around his foreign policy. Governor of Alaska hardly qualifies.

Think how effective the "call at 3am" ad would be with her compared to Obama. The more I think about it, the crazier the choice seems. I might change my mind later, but her performance as a candidate is going to have to be incredible to make up for what this is costing McCain.

Imagine how fired up Hillary probably is now for campaigning for Obama.

Will this affect how Biblical literalists vote (or, rather, if they'll stay home)? As I understand it, the Bible says that you mustn't have women in leadership positions. But if it does, I expect the fundamentalists to strategically ignore this passage for now.

I also have to wonder if this is a jab at Wahhabism abroad, giving this selection a foreign policy angle.

This will be an interesting statistic to track. It seemed to me that most (not all) Hillary supporters were supporters not because she was a woman, but because they felt she could best represent their interests. To change over to Palin just because they are an angry Hillary supporter would seem to imply/confirm they just want a woman in office, regardless of her qualifications or political bent.

That would be pretty sad.

I expect Hillary to make a mockery of Palin's lack of experience. Think about it, as much as Hillary likely loathes Obama for beating her, do you think she could idly sit by and watch Palin be the first woman in the White House ... instead of Hillary? I fully expect this to backfire for McCain if he was after Hillary supporters.

She's ready. Alaska is the largest state in the union; she governs almost a million people.

For every one of those legitimate criticisms, I reluctantly point to Vice President Quayle..

This looks like an act of desperation. He hopes to pick up disaffected Hillary supporters, obviously, and he may pick up a few, but at the risk of alienating the hardcore "barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen" crowd that makes up a significant portion of the right-wing vote. I give McCain credit for courage, but not much for brains.

The vice-presidential debates should be interesting.

I suppose if someone has that as a requirement, they could always look at it has her being second to McCain (sort of like their view of marriage), and just stay in denial of the possibility of her needing to take over in the case of an emergency.
