Sarah Palin Denial Syndrome?

I just wanted to note that in the Times story linked above about Palin's crib notes, it is referred to as a "Hillbilly Palm Pilot".

Just for giggles I googled "Sarah Palin hillbilly", "Sarah Palin redneck", and "Sarah Palin 'white trash'". For example, here is an editorial on HuffPo on Palin that refers to her and her supporters as white trash and rednecks. It makes absolutely nothing but cultural appeals. Notice that the article is dated Sept. 3, 2008.
Like Margaret Thatcher, Sarah Palin calls up memories of tough nannies, nurses, governesses and mommies. This flank of Momism doesn't threaten like Hillary Clinton or Gloria Steinem. The populace loves Mommy squared.

There's a photo of Sarah Palin in a stars and stripes bikini, toting an automatic weapon. It says more than any Op-Ed or blog. Hot broad with cool weapon. Every school shooter's dream of womanhood. Alas, the photo is photoshopped, but true in spirit.

Liberal women might change our country from a teenage boy's dream to an adult republic of laws. Aw, no fair. If you think the real America means guns and motorcycles, snowmobiles and beauty contests, this pistol-packin' Momma's for you.

...

White trash America certainly has allure for voters. Some people think rednecks are more American than Harvard educated intellectuals of mixed race. God help us in the next election. The NRA and the oil industry sure won't.

Can anyone tell me a substantive argument from that editorial?

ETA: hell, google the word "snowbilly" and a reference to Palin comes up in the second link.

Ya and then there's the fact that even early in his career, Hitler was directing Nazi thugs to break up socialist parades and meetings. People died then, many more died later.

honestly, folks who say that the Nazis were Socialists, really are Historical Revisionists.

no one with a brain honestly believes that Nazi Fascism is a form of Socialism. if anything...it only belittles those who suggest such silliness.

It only means that the term "socialism" is multiply defined and means many different things. By some definitions, any form of government is socalist because it has the purpose of improving society for all citizens.

The best way to react to things like this is to keep your buttons from being pushed and your chains from being yanked.

After all, some countries that effectively have a dictator have "Democratic" somewhere in their official country name.

Cute. I tried the same trick:

Call me crazy, but may I suggest that argument ad googlem is perhaps not the best evidence for *anyone's* case?

I wasn't actually trying to make an argument. The post before me spoke of googling Sarah Palin terms, and I had tried it and came across that, and simply thought it was funny. I had hoped it would be received in that manner. There was no underlying message. I'm not surprised there are as many bad things about Obama. Not at all. I'm betting it's par for the course for most well known political leaders of recent history. I just thought it was funny!

ETA: In particular, I actually got a real chuckle out of it as I was reading them down, like a laundry list of things.. she's retarded, an idiot, is a retard.. And the "not a us citizen" made me giggle as well. If I was trying to make an actual point, with that as evidence, I would have presented it with details and arguments, not expected it to be deciphered from the picture alone. I really just found it humorous.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait.

Suddenly, when Obama has a good score, IQ (or LSAT, here serving as the surrogate for MENSA membership) scores are evidence of superior intelligence?

I thought that all good people know intelligence is something very diverse, hard to quantify, far wider than whatever it is IQ tests measure, and so on?

Or is that the case only when some poor disadvantaged group doesn't do as well as expected on such tests, while it is perfectly OK to praise it to the sky as iron-clad proof of someone's intelligence when you like them?

I have to agree with Skeptic on this one, folks. In my opinion, citing MENSA as a group of people with "superior intelligence" is laughable. I've known too many people in MENSA to believe that :)

I can't. That editorial is a waste of space. What's your point?

I can't speak for what MikeMagnum was getting across, but his examples and others like them prove that disparaging what perhaps could be referred to as Palin's ethnicity is somewhat culturally acceptable, as opposed to criticizing the ethnicity of our current President.

Oh my.

And they sneer at Obama for using a teleprompter.

I don't knock anyone doing public speaking for using notes, teleprompters, scribbles on the hand, etc because I've done plenty of it myself and needed such aids. What bugs me is her hypocritical attitude about it.

The Republican party, sadly, has a history of elevating imbeciles to high office.

Ronald Reagan was an imbecile who became president.
Dan Quayle was an imbecile who became vice president.
George W. Bush was an imbecile who became president.
Sarah Palin is an imbecile who wants to be president.

Before people get all snippy and point out that other parties have their share of imbeciles......
Takes one to know one.

ethnic chauvinism and bigotry are incompatible with true socialism.

In 1920s South Africa, mine owners fired white miners and hired black ones, who worked for less. The miners' unions didn't like that, and appealed to various socialist organizations abroad for support.

Those organizations agreed, and for a while there was a world campaign to help the white miners under the slogan: "Workers of the world unite for a white South Africa!"

At the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday, the commander in chief not only got a sailor's name wrong, but couldn't figure out how to pronounce "corpsman." Yes, he said "corpse-man." Twice.
...
Where does the media get the idea that this guy is a great speaker? If George W. Bush or Sarah Palin (or any other Republican) had said this, it would be repeated for the entire weekend and beyond. Obama, on the other hand, gets a pass.
...
Obama Calls Navy Corpsman a 'Corpse-man'
The eloquent teleprompter man. :oldroll:

The guy sees 'fallen heroes' in the audience at his Memorial Day speeches.

It's a theme: he sees dead people, let him run with it.

Well, at least nobody called her a bicycle.

do you know what its like to be called a "baby-killer", a "Communist", a "Liberal Fascist", and a "America-hater" every time you debate someone?

Liberals do.

I've gotten 'baby-killer,' 'communist,' and 'America-hater' (or at least accusations of hating America). Missed the fascist one. Throw in some references to Satan, several suggestions that I was helping terrorists or supporting terrorism, and at least one instance of someone saying my political opinions were the results of self-loathing and a suicide wish.

And I'm not even that liberal. 1996-2006 was a screwed up set of 10 years.

I see where you're coming from, but look at it from the other side. Palin has embraced and promoted the "snowbilly" image; in fact, it's the only image of herself she's promoted. Her best answers in interviews have been little more than repetition of vacuous talking points that you can get from any Republican; taxes bad, free market good, and so on.

Compare to, say, Mike Huckabee, a Southern Baptist preacher from a small town in Arkansas with a working-class background. In every way he's just as much of a "hick" as Palin, but you rarely ever see people harping on that particular image.

I would posit that the difference between the two is that when you ask Huckabee a question, he'll give you a thoughtful and intelligent answer. Say what you will about the guy - but he's got a head on his shoulders and is very well-spoken. He's got a similar "folksy charm" as Palin, but he backs that up with something more solid than repeating "maverick" every five minutes.

In short, I think that a good chunk of the reason why people go on about Palin's "ethnicity" is for two reasons: #1, she's intentionally cultivated that image, and #2, that's all that's there. Once you take away the image of a folksy hockey mom from Alaska who can skin a moose, there's nothing left.

My point was that, on the night of Palin's introduction, with almost nothing to base an opinion on other than her speech at the Republican convention, a liberal editorial pops up that attacks her for nothing other than her mannerisms and her supposed group identity as a redneck and white trash. There was no substantive disagreement with anything that she said mentioned in the editorial, just the equivalent of "she's a hick".
