Santorum talks about Satan destroying America

What offends me most is the illogic of the position. Even if you accept the premise that Satan and God exist and are at war and using Earth as their battleground, it still doesn't hold together. Two superbeings fighting each other would generate a LOT more damage and noise than people voting in referendums (referenda?) to permit gay marriage! "I am Satan: immortal, implacable, mighty! And I will use my powers....to encourage a percentage of the population to indulge in plebescitical processes in the democratic process with no guarantee of success." No. I am Satan, I will create an airborne supervirus that turns people gay. I will disrupt the gravitational pull of the Sun. I will get Paula Abdul an hour-long sitcom.

When Superman fights Darkseid, people notice. When omnipotent creator being fights his nemesis only dorky idiots with bad hair and awful shoes notice?

If I were Satan (or God), I sure as hell wouldn't need anybody to interpret my intentions or announce my actions to mortals. You would all know what I wanted because it would be carved in letters of fire on your damn bones!

It's not like JC spoke Latin....Anyone doing Aramaic these days?

If you really want your Mass in Aramaic you can. It would take a bit of looking around but there are Catholics who do celebrate it this way

So his logic is that being smart makes one more likely to be seduced by the Devil?

And he said this at a university?

It troubles me to hear his views on sexual intimacy. How can anyone subject a woman to such lunacy as convincing her that she will forgo her sexuality with her husband except for the purpose of bearing another child, in the name of his mistaken idea of religious piety.
That is even more absurd in light of the fact that when Paul said in Romans "Women, submit your husbands," he meant that they SHOULD have sexual relations just to express their affection for one another, because loving kindness toward each other was what God commands of all of us, and sex in marriage, is expplicitly sanctioned by God.

Ther fundies may not see Santorum as one of their own, but their political aggenda is the same as far as birth control and sexual propriety.

Well, obviously Satan thinks intelligence is attractive. From his perspective, anyone he "corrupts" will end up spending eternity with him.

I was going to watch the video in the OP...I really was, but then, I thought, "meh...I'll just watch this one instead" :

It's the Roman Catholic Church. Since at least the Second Century it was not seen as a Jewish sect but a separate religion. (FWIW, all the evidence suggests that the Gospels were written in Greek.)

Republican supporters on this forum are atypical. The Religious Right are in line with him. The Religious Right doesn't include Catholicism

You do realize that Santorum is Catholic?

That's why I say he is atypical of the religious right. (ETA: And it's why I said it's highly unlikely he's a Dominionist or anything like that.)

Whenever I hear a man, in good health, brag smugly about his ability to refrain from grabbing the woman in bed next to him on a regular basis for the purpose of expressing his affection in a very special way, and calling this lack of attraction a virtue, I assume he has no sexual interest in the woman either because he is a closet gay and taking care of business all alone, or he is getting some on the side with another partner, male or female.

So when Santorum says crazy stuff like, using birth control is not ok....I wish there were reporters with the stones to ask questions that are pertinent to his claims, such as,

"Well, Mr. Santorum, that is quite a claim.... then do you masturbate a lot? or do you have another lover? Do you not find your wife attractive? Does she give you oral sex? Are you in good health? Do you use the rhythm method? Coitus interruptus? Do you use porn? Since we all know men need some sort of release." Just ask! If he is idiotic enough to make the claim, then have the guts to follow up and see if he is in fact a hypocrite.

Would that be the Eastern Rite?

Yeah, I'm pretty certain no Roman Catholics celebrate the mass in Aramaic--at least not on a regular basis (perhaps as a curiosity). A quick bit of googling, and I found that Chaldean Catholics in Iraq have Aramaic masses. [ETA: Also the Maronites have an Aramaic mass.]

That's a distinction that means nothing to Santorum. Check out this article about what he talked about tonight.

You wont find the word Catholic in it. You will see direct and indirect references to Christian. Specifically how Santorum, and by extension all right thinking people are, while Obama, apparently, is something else.

I think Santorum is pushing the envelope to see how far he can go using Religion as the wedge issue. In a way, I hope he gets the nomination. It will be interesting to see how he plays his cards.

I understand he does attend a traditional Latin-mass church...

Are we quite sure he's not aligned with the Dominionists/New Apostolic loons?

Sounds like the sort of silliness they go on about.

The good old Latin Mass, because, as everyone knows, the Romans who crucified Jesus spoke Latin, so Jesus just loves it when people praise him in Latin.

I think the implicit idea is that they sort of fight their conflict by proxy via pulling mortals to one side or the other... kind of like in "Faust". They´re still building up their armies for the final conflict.

If I were Satan (or God), I sure as hell wouldn't need anybody to interpret my intentions or announce my actions to mortals. You would all know what I wanted because it would be carved in letters of fire on your damn bones!

Good point. Would a simple "No, you damn idiot, this is not how I meant it!" do so much harm?

Santorum isn't going anywhere.

1. He kicked libertarians in the balls. They're, oh, about 50% of the Republican party.

2. As Michigan is next on the GOP intra-party hit list parade, we're seeing all kinds of neat ads, like Santorum sitting around bragging about his many earmarks.

So now that Newt's also shot himself in the foot and right out of things, that leaves Romney. Another sickening, disappointing time for the GOP ahead.

Well, here we are, 1.2 decades into the 21st Century, nearly two millenia after John of Patmos explained in great detail how the Kingom of God was so imminent that everyone needed to keep their bags packed and sleep with their clothes on.

But the two supernatural bozos are still hard at it. I had hoped that the Good Guy would have won the Battle of Monkey Aquisition by now, and the long nightmare of knowing the gods are as crazy as the monkeys would at last be...well...I guess it never will be over, will it. Everyone with a lick of sense will always know how crazed the two supernatural morons are. Unless they snuff us, which they swear they will never, never do, preferring instead to torture our souls forever - Presumably for knowing too much.

When I think about it, I realise that "God" is "Good" with an "o" missing. And Satan was too much of a spoiled supernatural brat to even handle being the 2nd most powerful being in heaven, and then, when he couldn't handle being number two any more, couldn't even whup a crazy bastard with an "o" missing. And the crazy bastard who eventually "won" that loony battle went on to concoct an even crazier continuing battle, which drags on even to this day.

We are domed. I mean doomed.

Demons! Thats what wrong with America, demons.

Can these people be serious!? I am going to be shaking my head in disbelief for awhile on this one. I appreciate and respect someone personal desire for faith and religion but when you go about blaming things on demons it's pure escapist fantasy. Its passing the buck, "Its not our fault! The demons did it!"

The good old Latin Mass, because, as everyone knows, the Romans who crucified Jesus spoke Latin, so Jesus just loves it when people praise him in Latin.

Well, the Roman Catholic Church historically blamed the Jews. In the passion stories, they're careful to show Pilate washing his hands of the matter and simply caving in to the demands of the Jews. (In the Gospel of John, Jesus himself apparently isn't Jewish since he speaks of "you Jews" and "your laws" as if he were an outsider.)

Of course the theology of the crucifixion is really weird. Jesus' sacrifice is seen as being the ultimate redemption of mankind, so it's a good thing! Reminds me of a lyric from Jesus Christ Superstar where Judas says of his coming betrayal, "You want me to do it! What if I just stayed here and ruined your ambition?"

Anyway, I think the attraction of Latin masses these days is nostalgia and familiarity and has no big theological significance.
