I wouldn't deny that there's an organic "PC" phenomenon where individuals and public bodies take it upon themselves to decide what is and isn't being sensitive to minority groups, and they miss the mark. Individuals that I've witnessed doing it are often doing it in order to exercise unquestionable power over others, and bodies mostly because it wards off lawsuits, or they think it does. I also think that our current government facilitates this kind of thing with their (ideologically admirable, but often poorly thought-out) desire to protect people and strive for equality. The end result of all this, plus the urban myth/tabloid exaggeration stuff, is the "climate" of PC, part real, part imagined. But yeah, we have to be careful of seeing bogeymen everywhere.
