I like this article for the reasons stated by the author. I'm not certain how often the same occurs here but it does happen. What say you?

Skeptics shouldn't have lined up with the Mail to call Psychic Sally a fraud
We shouldn’t be afraid to tell people the full story, or admit the things we don’t know. Otherwise, we’ve engaged in exactly the sort of sloppy, lazy, error-prone journalism [criticisms my emphasis] we’d normally criticise. The great pity about the legal battle between the Daily Mail and ‘Psychic’ Sally Morgan was that somebody had to win. The Mail’s humiliating failure to outsmart a Come Dine With Me contestant who talks to dead people is delicious, but it's spoiled somewhat by a psychic’s ‘vindication’ in the courts, like biting into a Wagon Wheel and finding Bovril inside. What’s even more galling is that she deserved to win. Before we go any further, one thing needs to be made crystal clear.... Very true. If she was pulling a Popoff or something like that, we should have gone in with a scanner and tried to catch her red-handed. Blunders like these can have terrible consequences. She describes feeling suicidal after death threats and abuse were hurled at her.

I'm happy to clarify that Sally Morgan doesn't use radio messages when defrauding people by pretending she can communicate with their dead relatives.

Hmm, don't be so sure. She might. I'll race you to her next gig with a scanner.

:( It would be fair to say that Sally Morgan is a normal person ,just like the rest of us.If she can talk to "dead people",why can't the rest of us do the same ?...Life after death has never been proven to exist ,so I deem it an impossibility to communicate with a deceased person , I don't believe in ghosts, or all other things that go bump in the night ,that is my prerogative.I say that she is using cold reading, trickery, and the gullibility of people to convince them that she is a "psychic" .....Hot reading uses electronics as per Peter Popoff...That's MY take on it !

That's a less specific way to put it which is perfectly secure legally. If you don't believe that she's communicating with the dead then this inevitably means you must be claiming that she is, in all likelyhood, pretending to by using non-supernatural means. The problem with the Zenon article is that the DM made a specific and direct allegation, and when it comes to the law, ordinary claims require ordinary evidence.;)

It would have been far better for somebody to plant themselves in the audience with a scanner and get the proof first, and then write the article. Imagine what a coup that would have been for skepticism! "Popoff 2" I think we threw a way a wonderful opportunity; worse, we have lost the opportunity and shot ourselves in the foot.

At least only the Daily Mail lost money, and the theatre technician(s) kept their job.

The Con Artist

Whilst no sensible person would condone making death threats to anyone, perhaps this might turn out to be a good thing.

It might bring things to a head and stop this con artist from making fortunes out of fools!

The joke case (Daily Mail) is hopefully the start to bring this thief DOWN!

Just to record the most obvious fact.

ANYONE claiming to be psychic is in one, or both, of only two states.

1) A CON ARTIST.

2) MENTALLY UNWELL.

Protect the feeble-minded. Join the campaign to change our stupid laws which actually condone LEGALISED THEFT!

Email your M.P. requesting the issue be raised in parliament. to prohibit these thieves from advertising or performing.

Did they? At the time I was struck with the care that Simon Singh went about asking questions. He certainly didn't accuse her of cheating with a radio/earpiece but asked some pertinent questions of Morgan and the theatre. AFAIK none of them were answered.

The lesson to be learned is not to associate with the Daily Fail whatever side they are temporarily on.

I think if someone accuses a psychic of fraud and lying it should be then up to them to prove that they are NOT ,not the other way arnd.where a clear&total liar is able to sue. This is one of the silliest most ignorant lawsuits I have ever seen.and I come from the land of ppl suing fastfood chains for making them obese, geez

Skepticism 101: The burden of proof is on the claimant.
Skepticism 102: The more exotic the claim, the more proof required.

The only thing 100% reliable about psychics is that they fail under careful testing. Not some of the time, not most of the time, but absolutely, positively, 100% of the time.

If enough people with more than two firing synapses contacted their M.P. and demanded the issue be raised in parliament to prohibit these thieves from advertising or performing, surely matters would be brought to a head and we could declare, once and for all, ALL PSYCHICS ARE CON ARTIST or MENTALLY UNWELL. (Or both)

My M.P. totally agrees with me but did not raise the issue saying he felt the current law was sufficient! Any fool can say whatever they like about communicating with dead people as long as they do not say anything "bad". What kind of law is that? Protect the feeble-minded! Jail these charlatans!

I dont believe she had death threats.
She says she called the police at one point. Either that's a lie too or she called them because she had evidence of real death threats.

Does this mean if I'm a journalist I can write an article specifically accusing a medium at a Spiritualist church of... I dunno... raiding their clients' dustbins like M Lamar Keene, and then when she gets arrested and prosecuted, she should be convicted, unless she can prove she didn't! Whatever we may think of psychics, this is a majorly dangerous legal reform you're talking about!

Con artists and mentally ill I'm sure they are but I'm opposed to stopping psychics by law. I think there's a civil rights issue at stake here. Officially it is a religion and covered by the freedom of worship laws in most nations. To cut across that is a very serious matter. The solution instead is education and promotion of rational thought and the skeptical analysis of psychic mediumship.
