Russian Sub Freed

C. Scrut.: What a pity you weren’t there. Doubtless you would have had them in fits of merriment from your witty play on words as they contemplated their predicament during those long, dark hours.

Anyway, we did it!

Of course there will be recriminations (some of them possibly justified), but for the moment it is just great news.

I agree! Although, all that laughing would probably burn a lot of oxygen.

Well, at least until Hollywood makes a movie about it, and then it will turn out that good-old American know-how and fortitude saved the day (reference the Movie U571). ;)

Still, it was a nice piece of work in a very inhospitable part of the world.

LOL. Nice reference, Hutch. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood changed the nationality of the heros.

How do you feel about Tom Cruise as captain of the rescuing submarine?

From The Central Scrutinizer:

Hmmm. You do realise you’re making a scientific (i.e. falsiable) statement here?

I’m not being entirely frivolous: what actually should one do to conserve oxygen in those circumstances?

So you saw Enigma: The Movie. (OK, but there were no Americans in the original.)

what confuses me is when I read an account about how someone like RANDI was able to stay in a coffin underwater for an extended period of time...

Some people claim the magicians use a special form of "breathing control".

Sleep horizontally and comfortably warm. Lowest oxygen consumption rate short of theoretical "hibernation". Sleeping while cold still consumes calories and thus oxygen maintaining body heat. Next step would be to not consume oxygen at all, i.e. die.

I just hate it when that happens. Worse yet is when I post to the wrong forum. Still, nothing is worse than someone responding to such posts.

And Alan Rickman as the evil British admiral of the Russian Navy, intent on scuppering the heroic American rescue attempt for his own implausibly diabolical reasons?

If you got sufficiently cold as to start suffering from hypothermia, wouldn't you start to use less oxygen? Must have been pretty chilly down there.

I'm wondering how these guys with "less than 24 hours of air" managed to survive for something like three days. Was that just the Russians being oddly secretive again, or did they really manage to eke it out?

During their ordeal the crew had just a few gulps of water a day to drink and just a few biscuits to eat

Captain: Well, men, we're down to our last few gulps of water and a couple of biscuits. But we pull together and use our training we should be able to eke them out for -

*Gulp* *Gulp* *Gulp*

Captain: Who drank our last gulps of water?

Crewmember: I did. Biscuits always make me thirsty.

(Not original, but can't remember who I've stolen it from)
