Russia Blocks U.N. Council Bid To Thank Ban Ki-Moon For Gay Rights Work

Russia prevented the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday from thanking outgoing Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon specifically for promoting gay rights during his decade in office, diplomats said.

I don't get why Russia would expend political capital like that. Don't they want to be seen as more pro-gressive and not regressive?

The whole "gay" thing befuddles me. Sincerely, I have never cared what two people do with their genitals. Humans have done so much- mathematics, language, engineering. Yet we still care about what people want to do with their own bodies. <sigh>

Well, Israel has got Hamas, and Russia has got the Gays. I guess everybody has got to invent an enemy to hate.

Meanwhile, the Russians are playing golden-oldie scratchy LPs of Anita Bryant singing songs from the "Sunshine Tree": https://i.ytimg.com/vi/HOumQMo3HBE/maxresdefault.jpg

Really sick stuff.

Russia is a lot of things. Two of the service engineers at my work now refuse to go there for the level of racism. They were never bothered when they were with me, but things were nasty if they went out and about on their own. The OMON were always pulling guys over for the guilt of not being Slavic. In St Petersburg there are thugs raiding brothels, attacking gays, etc. Yet the same thugs have young girls draped over them when they are sat in the bars.

In one hotel that I was staying in (recent build, relatively expensive), the restaurant/bar near the reception was no smoking. In comes a big bear of a guy with his twenties something girlfriend, starts being stroppy and demands the no smoking signs are removed. The staff give way and do exactly that.

Despite the huge investment going on there much of the infrastructure is literally falling to pieces, even some of the new builds are having to be repaired already. It's a very confusing country, the people can be very welcoming, but there is a very disturbing level of misogyny, racism, and sheer thuggery hiding all around.

Really? That's just the Russia of today!

Deal.

I do wonder if some of this is motivated by the teasing Putitin gets about his macho image.

We've all noted the phenomena in the United States of how anti-gay conservative lawmakers are often caught in airport bathrooms doing things they would pass legislation against. I'm sure this phenomena must apply in other oppressive countries as well.

Maybe they're passing legislation because they want to feel extra dirty...

My favorite theory is that Putin is a closet homosexual and is doing everything in his power to appear heterosexual. You don't become such a homophobe without a personal stake in it. Plus the clerofascism he uses to control the country comes with it's share of baggage, and he probably scored a few minor internal politics points with the move.

It demonstrates his grasp on Russia isn't nearly as firm as he would have us believe.

Russia is about a century behind the times, maybe a century and a half. Which is, as I recall, the historical norm. They'll become fairly normal by the end of the century, I hope.

Unfortunately, no!! That is why I really do find it interesting that he poses for photos that are "straight" out of gay pornzines like Kake and related and doesn't realize how they make knowledgeable people think of him. Tom of Finland would be proud!!!:):):)

Russia has no say, Putin does. Putin does the bootin' and the lootin' and the pootin' and the shootin'!!!!! And goes in his own backdoor - he's that limber with his timber!!
