Rumours about a Canadian election!

So, there are rumours afoot that Trudeau will be calling an election! CBC is reporting leaks that he will call the GG on Sunday to dissolve Parliament.

So, let's discuss this rumour: A good call? A bad call? It's all a hoax made up by that commie nazi Plenty O'Tool?

And if it turns out we are having an election, then we can use this thread for rumours about things that happen during the campaign. Did Jagmeet Singh really convert to Rastafarianism? Was Trudeau really found naked in front of 24 Sussex, crying out to the ghost of his father for guidance? Is "Plenty O'Tool" really his name?

Risky (as all election calls are) but understandable.

Its earlier than expected, and there are no outstanding political crises that need to be dealt with. (Its a minority government, but the NDP has been fairly supportive.) In that way its a bit more brazen than Harper's early call.

The hair must expect that good poll numbers, combined with a general uptick post-pandemic will give them an advantage. (He'd better hope we don't get hit by a huge delta-variant surge.)

I think he's going to take a hit for calling it now. No one else seems to want an election right now, so I think the NDP will take at least some of their votes. I think Trudeau might get a surprise in some ridings that swing between Liberal and NDP.

I doubt the Cons will gain much. They're pretty disorganized right now, and have annoyed a lot of people with their Republican-lite nonsense, particularly with regards to the pandemic.

Only Plenty O'Tool I heard of is the one who is a Bond Girl in Vegas in "Diamonds Are Forever".....

Based on the number of posts by Trudeau I'm seeing on Facebook, I think we are going to have an election.

It'd be funny if he lost seats if he did that.

And... its on.

From: CBC (The Mother Corp)
Following a meeting with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau this morning, Gov. Gen. Mary Simon approved his request to dissolve Parliament, triggering the issuing of the election writs and formally beginning Canada's 44th federal election. The campaign will last 36 days-the minimum campaign length permitted by law.

Like I said before... risky. The Liberals do lead in the polls, and while a majority is possible, it is far from assured...

From: CTV News (Pre-election article)
Anticipation that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will trigger an election on Sunday has resulted in a “recoil effect” in the Liberals' ballot numbers, possibly moving them out of majority territory, according a survey conducted by Nanos Research....as the summer-long speculation of an election call shifted towards it looking more certain that Canadians are on the verge of being sent to the polls, voters have been swinging away from the Liberals.
...
Liberals are still leading in the polls, with 33.4 per cent ballot support...support has dropped by 5.9 per cent from where it was four weeks ago. The Conservatives appear to have made up some ground in that time, with 28.4 per cent...

I predict we'll probably end up with another Liberal minority government (although with perhaps fewer Liberal and more Conservative seats). I am basing that partly on the above polling numbers, and partly on the possibility of Canada being in the midst of a new wave of Covid-19 (which would both make Trudeau look worse, and also help the conservatives as their voting base tends to be older and probably more 'dedicated'/more motivated to vote.)

Well I'm definitely not voting Liberal here. And definitely not conservative for now... or Bloc... which of course leaves only one option.

Also known as the NDP, since they rebranded.
I thought NDP stood for "Not Destined for Power".

By the way, there is also the option of the Green Party. (Well, plus a bunch of minor parties that hold no chance of ever winning a seat, much less gaining power.) I'd never vote green myself, but some people do consider them a reasonable alternative, and depending on the riding you are in, they might win a seat or 2.)

Bad conservatives! No Biscuit!

From: CTV News
A Conservative government would have unvaccinated federal employees and air passengers pass COVID-19 tests instead of mandating they get inoculated, leader Erin O'Toole said...

Talk about an unforced error...

The majority of Canadians support the use of things like vaccine passports, so O'Toole seems to be out of step.

I have a theory that everyone secretly wants to lose this election. Who really wants to become Prime Minister just as a new wave of COVID is starting, and the vaccination rate is slowing down? Whoever wins gets stuck with the near-impossible job of getting that last recalcitrant 15-20% of non-vaxxers on board. None of them want that!

Trudeau calls an unpopular election that looks to be entirely motivated by partisan politics.

The Conservatives come out of the gate with a video so embarrassing, even their own MPs disowned it, then O'Toole follows up with the above comments that seem tailor-made to lose him supporters to the PPC.

The NDP goes hard left with "Tax the Rich!"

The PPC is still the PPC - Saw a campaign slogan today, "The other parties all suck!"

The Greens are just as confused as always.

This is going to be the election equivalent of playing Latchcomb:

A guy name Erin? In the US Erin (and of course as an Irish American I know the origina of that name) is 99% of the time a Female First Name.
SO I presume giving him the nickname Plenty is a direct reference to the Bond FIlm?

Out of curiosity I visited the Green Party of Canada website, and they are demanding a special session of Parliament to debate the Afghan crisis.
Uh, I am not trying to underplay the situation in Afghanistan, but what the hell could a special session do about the situation? Canada is not a major player here, and i think any situation that could arise until the next regular session could be handled by the powers the PM has. Sounds like a "feel good" gesture that could accomplish nothing but cost the taxpayers a lot of money.

Since the day he won the party leadership, and probably even before.

It's just one of those names that begs for parody. I was actually thinking more "Austin Powers" than Bond. Plus, it emphasizes how much of a tool he is.

All the opposition members are going off on Trudeau over this, as if any Canadian PM could have done anything different when the US pulled everything out. Canada never projects power overseas by itself, they all know it, but it's a stick they can use to beat Trudeau, so here they go.

True, last time we were at least 50% of the force used for foreign power projection we ended up getting to the conflict zone and finding out that Manitoba was now part of Canada.
