Rules on Smoking - Too Strict?

So what are you saying? That you actually want to make tobacco illegal? Because, as I said in an earlier post, the last time your country tried prohibition it worked so well, didn't it?

I'm agreeing with the person who started this sub-topic. Littering, of cigarette butts and anything else, should be taken more seriously. Moving some resources from speeding enforcement to littering enforcement would probably be a net positive.

Good. Inconsiderate smokers who throw their butts on the ground do us conscientious smokers no favours at all. If only a fraction of the money currently spent on demonising smokers and bullying them into quitting was put into information on responsible smoking, which would include proper disposal of butts, combined with a few more strategic placed litter bins, then there might be fewer butts lying around.

ETA: Something along the lines of "throwing your butts out of car windows can cause forest fires. Please dispose of them carefully" rather than "quit smoking you stinking, filthy scum!" is more likely to get people on your side.

Problem is, the current climate of polarisation isn't conducive to this sort of accommodation of smokers.

What about those speeding motorists who throw cigarette butts out of the window starting bush fires?

Don't get me wrong, I do not condone littering at all, but slowing drivers down would make it easier to catch the culprits wouldn't it.

Fair enough. All those children laying dead in the road as a result of speeding drivers should probably be classified as litter anyway.

Well I think our poor governments who have overspent for years are desperate to get some money in the coffers. Hit the smokers with instant fines, it'll put a smokescreen up to the failures to apprehend vicious dog keepers, illegal guns on the street. No, lets take out the vicious 55 year old having a puff in the park!

Like we don't pay enough tax on cigarettes already.
