There are different criteria for wearing boxers or briefs. When anyone asks me I just say, "Depends."
er... yeah... the chap/chapette that did the OP...I once read somewhere that the reason for wearing the holy underwear is that one of the church elders was in a fire and suffered burns to his exposed skin, but the parts of his body protected by his longjohns were unscathed. He attributed this to a miracle. Skeptics would probably point out that his longjohns just insulated him from the flames.
Any former Mormons here who can verify this story?

...Mormons are told in the temple that the garment will be a "shield and a protection to you against the power of the destroyer until you have finished your work here on earth."... Some LDS people believe that the garment provides them with "supernatural powers" of physical protection. Bill Marriott, prominent Mormon and owner of Marriott Hotels International, stated in an interview with Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes that he believed his garments protected him from being burned during a boating accident. There are numerous anecdotal stories about Mormons being burned (or cut) up to the garment line, after which they were "miraculously" protected.
Mormon beliefs are not that different than mainstream Xtian beliefs.
Zombie Jesus?
It's just that we are not used to hearing about their beliefs that make them sound strange.

Actually, they are quite different than mainstream Christianity - I think that's one of the points of the OP.
LDS folks reject the Trinity, for instance. Most Xtians don't. And the 'adoption' of Masonic rituals & symbols is fairly unique to Mormons, even if most don't know about their origin.
I don't think catholics are audited to make sure they are tithing correctly either.
Not any more, no.

It's almost time for the annual Hill Cumorah Pageant! A cast of hundreds will lip synch the story of the Book of Mormon on a stage on the side of a drumlin about five miles from my house. Pretty cool light show. The most fun is the protesters out front, usually JWs or fundies.
