But only because he's got it won and the resources can be deployed elsewhere:

The spokesman, Robert Reid, will be moved to Ohio, which is increasingly viewed by both campaigns as the central battleground of the 2012 race.

"With the increasingly widening polls in North Carolina, we will continue to allocate resources, including key senior staff, to other states," said Romney spokeswoman Sarah Pompei.

The race remains tight but what has happened in the last few days is that Obama has lost a lot of his paths to victory, while Romney has picked up additional outs, as we poker players like to say. A lot of Democrats have blustered bravely that Mitt can't win without Ohio, but lately it's looking like Obama can't find a road to the finish line without the Buckeye State.

My read? Obama's hit the iceberg; all that remains is the brave moment where he sinks beneath the waves.

Romney's picked up which paths? Through Pennsylvania? Michigan? He's had NC in the bag for almost thirty days. Is there any REALISTIC path other than through Ohio? I believe not. Virginia, Florida and Colorado just don't do it. He needs to get another 13 somewhere, and I just don't see it.

In fact - his line is probably going to start flattening in the polls that come out on Thu/Fri. The big delegate states that were moved to Undecided last week (MI, PA, OH*) will start trending very heavily to Obama, and even Florida will probably come out with one or the other leading by a half a point or point, on average. And if FL tightens up, his ground game in CO, IA, and NH suffers. Mitt needs to put everything into OH, FL & VA. If he doesn't take the larger two and hold onto VA, he's in deep doo-doo.

ETA: *Oops - I don't think OH will move. All the websites and news networks have too much vested in a close election and Ohio is THE story this year.

Mitt Romney must be made of teflon. He got soundly beat in the debate. I must have read 10 new topics and about 50 new.... "Romney is doomed" threads and posts. Yet I check intrade today and Romney is hitting 40%. Higher then before the debate and the highest I've seen.

The money on Intrade doesn't really work with a crystal ball, in spite of what some think. They, too, are subject to the media. The polls out presently don't show any opinions/results from after Obama-Romney II. My opinion is that the first debate ignited the already-leaning Romney "undecided" and the second one will have mobilized the already-leaning Obama "undecided". Even Karl Rove expects to see an overall two point swing for Obama as they results come in.

The intrade thing really surprised me today. Not sure what would account for Romney's jump. As far as North Carolina, I don't think anyone was under the illusion that North Carolina wouldn't go to Romney, but as I brought up in another thread, I don't understand RCP's methodology when it comes to the other states. Michigan and Pennsylavania have been solidly Obama even after the first debate, but still remain swing states according to RCP. Seems very generous on their part to still have those two listed as swing states.

Last week I was talking to my Dad whose politics are, according to him, slightly to the right of Ghengis Khan, who is livid at the way that certain politicians from his Conservative Party (in the UK) take votes from people like him for granted as they try to seize the middle ground. I tried to point out to him that politicians see things differently as they often "know" which seats are safe and don't bother campaigning there. I pointed out that it happens in the States too where, for example, Mitt Romney may not bother campaiging in states which he considers won. He was livid again, "That is ARROGANT!" I agreed with him but said that's the nature of certain political systems.

Then again, 538 has Obama having gained since yesterday, and has even turned VA from barely-red to just-slightly-blue.

Does this mean you'll quit asking for weight on your action? :D

North Carolina was always going to be a tough sell for Obama. It was listed as "Leaning Romney" until a couple of months ago when the gap narrowed, but it's always been closer to being Romney's than Obama's. I seriously doubt that Obama was counting on it.

There title of this thread makes me snicker.

Well now with him pulling out, it looks like Obama is shooting for Romney's sloppy seconds. Here are the numbers behind Obama's ad buys yesterday.

Below are the details of the additional $6.24 million the Obama campaign has bought:

FL: $1,320,754]
NV: $253,050
WI: $770,194
OH: $1,654,398
NH: $722,945
VA: $199,535
NC: $1,320,085

Exactly. Just like when Obama hit that iceberg known as Sarah Palin. She sunk his career good.

I am not clicking on the link but it isn't a parody of "nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning" is it?
No. It's an original song by an obscure singer/songwriter, referring to town names. Just a YouTube link. However, I understand your reticence. I'm not keen on looking at unknown links. This one's just a funny though.
