TOLEDO, OH -- Mitt Romney on Wednesday pointed to the health care reform law he enacted as governor of Massachusetts as proof of his empathy and care for the American people.

In an interview with NBC News, Romney referenced an element of his record he almost never invokes on the campaign trail to answer a question about how he can better connect with Americans and prove he understands the lives and trials of middle class Americans.

"I think throughout this campaign as well, we talked about my record in Massachusetts, don't forget -- I got everybody in my state insured," Romney told NBC's Ron Allen in an interview before his rally here tonight. "One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record."

Seriously, Mitt? What do you think your own party is going to have to say to that?

ETA: And also just three days after saying that providing basic health care is having an ambulance take someone to the emergency room. What a moron.

At least he's finally talking about Romneycare. He's been afraid to mention it since the day he announced his hat was in the ring.

don't forget -- I got everybody in my state insured,

By having a mandate. But he's opposed to the mandate on a national level. So how's he going to cover pre-existing conditions without a mandate?

He only cares about people when it's politically expedient. When it's not, they're part of the 47% that he doesn't need to worry about.

The only thing it's proof of is that Romney is a sock puppet for Big Medicine. Romneycare (like the Obamacare we got as opposed to what was promised) is nothing but a giveaway to the industry.

No price controls. No guaranteed universal coverage. No NHS.

It comes a lot closer to universal coverage... Medicaid eligibility expands to include only income as a factor, rather than income plus some other factor... and subsidies are available if the insurance you have access to is priced higher than a benchmark. Also, one of the most common reasons coverage is denied is now out the window.

I don't honestly know if it's 100%... but it is a very big step.

I GET IT! He's thinking "What did I do to win before.... I KNOW! I'll just do what I did in Massachusetts!"

On paper.

Medicaid eligibility expands to include only income as a factor, rather than income plus some other factor...

Was turned into an "opt out" program which many states promptly did just that.

and subsidies are available if the insurance you have access to is priced higher than a benchmark.

Basically subsidizing Big Insurance while not reforming the system or controlling costs.

Also, one of the most common reasons coverage is denied is now out the window.

The one arguably good thing to come out of the mess.

I don't honestly know if it's 100%... but it is a very big step.

It's certainly not 100%. I have trouble seeing it as even 30%. given that for every elimination of "pre-existing conditions" clause, it has a subsidy for the same Big Medicine companies that have us in this mess to begin with.

Obama should have stuck to his guns and pushed for a NHS.
