Roman Dodecahedron

Well, the size of a singularity might be hard to predict, so they provided different hole sizes just in case.
Yeah, I thought about it first too .. but then I realized you don't need hole for every singularity size .. you just need a hole which is large enough .. that's a neat thing about singularities. So having the maximum size holes everywhere would work just fine.

On the serious note .. the different hole sizes would be great for sorting objects by diameter .. like coins. The theory has holes though .. first I don't think back in the day the coins actually had precise diameters .. second some of the dodecahedrons have holes all of the same size.
 
Maybe the Romano-Celts found some of these buried in the ground, and couldn't work out what they were for. Then a bunch of people made replicas to try and find out what they were for. It was a trend for a bit, until everyone got bored and something else became the hot new ancient mystery.
