I remember it being 3 but apparently Asimov added a fourth one (the Zeroth Law) later.

Please explain why these laws do not work well for real-world artificial intelligence

There it is. Artificial intelligence is capable of explaining why these "laws" are difficult to implement in real life.
Oh how surprising, AI tells us that such protections are difficult to implement... No conflict of interest there....

There it is. Artificial intelligence is capable of explaining why these "laws" are difficult to implement in real life (or even in Asimov's fictional universe).
And by "capable of explaining" we mean "capable of generating a statistically likely approximation of what humans have tended to say on the subject."
 
I don't think that distinction is relevant - it's not like a hypothetical remote operator could control the motors individually for the run.
 
But are they autonomous robots or merely remote controlled or programmed drones?
I seem to recall that the Chinese demonstration of a robot-ran half marathon were in fact mere RC drones?
I think the feat is more about physical engineering than the "AI", albeit it is impressive that they have software that can keep it upright at such speeds. One issue if you look at nearly all the humanoid robots is achieving anything like the speed of humans from motors you can fit in the humanoid shape, even the ones that can do the dance moves and the like tend to look like a bad Frankenstein monster when it comes to walking and running. The Chinese are so far ahead of anyone else in robots that is hard to see any way they won't dominate the market, if such a market exists. (That is a big if.)
 
I was watching a video of a robot doing gymnastics the other day. People in the comments were laughing...ha ha ha, look at how bad the robot is at gymnastics!!! My 8 year old daughter is better than that!

I was like, wow, that is absolutely amazing! The robot was doing leaps, jumps, flips and a whole bunch of balance-checks. Are you kidding me???

A bipedal robot being able to maintain its balance? This is scarily amazing!

That was like a few years ago when random politician was scoffing at an NSF grant being given to develop a robot capable of folding clothes. It was dismissed as trivial. But people who know what's going would recognize that as a monumental accomplishment. Folding clothes is a complicated task when you think about it. Besides, it's annoying as heck, so it would be great to have a robot to do it...

The last bit is the bit I’m vague on I guess.
What is the ultimate point of this, and what is the market beyond the obvious military one?

Rewatched snippets of the competition with my wife, and beyond belly laughs at the victors crashing and burning (literally) we both made the same observation.

Haven’t these guys seen any sci-fi? The worst thing you can do is build a robot that is larger, faster and stronger than a human. Every time…

They tried that, but running by operating the arms and legs via remote control was very difficult. So they added gyros and accelerometers and autonomous locomotion software to achieve stability, and a camera to give the operator a first-person view. But it was still a bit awkward, so they added machine vision so the operator just had to give the command 'run' and the drone did the rest by itself. Not AI as such, but also not a puppet with a human pulling the strings.

Essentially a better search engine parser, and there's nothing wrong with that. Of course it has no understanding of what it said, but that's not needed for this application.

It's not a better search engine parser.

It's a convenient search results interpreter if you're ignorant of the topic, don't have much time, and don't really care if your answer is correct or complete.

I'd rather have a Wikipedia page with cites, that I can read and follow up on myself, than a chatbot's hallucination of what a good answer might look like.

If the Chinese wanted to scare the bejebus out of the US, they would film a robot passing a boot camp obstacle course - the technology is obviously there.
 
I've been to boot camp. There is no obstacle course. Even if there were, a robot getting through it wouldn't be scary. Boot camp is literally the lowest common denominator of physical challenge.

Every military in the world is already thinking way beyond that, thinking in terms of integrating robots with combat infantry on the battlefield.

Ukraine already has prototypes in active service.
 
I mean, lets' be real: Humanoid robots are a waste of time. It boggles my mind that anybody, let alone everybody, is so fixated on them. We have a literal superpower: To bypass evolutionary time at will. There's no reason to limit ourselves to form factors produced by slow trial and error over millions of years.

Big Dog is a better idea. Spot is a better idea. Milrem's TheMIS is a better idea.

Speaking of boot camp obstacle courses, Ukraine already has combat robots doing actual combat things, not toy facsimiles of combat things. And yes, that is the point.

Ukraine is already fielding swarmbots that use AI for autonomous target selection. That's far scarier than any Chinese android playing weekend warrior.
