Ed Rob Menard's FOTL Claims

I've been on a Youtube kick recently, and unsurprisingly my walk has led me to many, many channels with Menard-esque Freemen. It's sad in a way. There is one surrounding Keene, NH, but the Freemen don't seem to understand that their method just isn't working. People get arrested, tried, and convicted because they try to defend themselves with spurious arguments including "who was the victim?" in a traffic ticket case (actually, all cases I've seen so far). One of their members is now a felon because he illegally recorded several phone conversations, and tried to justify his actions (again, with the "who was the victim?" defense).

FOTL supporters, far and wide, come off as pretentious, obnoxious know-it-alls who do their best to harrass law enforcement for daring to try to enforce speed limits (granted, I think it's unfair to abuse speed traps, but that's not quite the issue), and then whine and complain when the officer ends up arresting them. They employ a less-than-accurate knowledge of what they think the law is, and gleefully twist the wording to suit their own agendas (legalize pot, get rid of traffic laws, not pay taxes) and proclaim themselves the victors even when found guilty by a judge or their peers.

FOTL members think they can be exempt from society's rules and regulations because "I didn't consent to this when I became self-aware". Too bad. You don't like society? Go to another country. Don't want to pay taxes? Go to the middle of nowhere and build your own roads. It irks me to see these "Freemen" use public highways that are paid for by tax dollars, and then say "I'm not driving, I'm traveling, I'm not part of your society".

"I'm not driving, I'm traveling, I'm not part of your society".
And oddly enough if one of them "travelled" into your vehicle and wrote it off and you asked them for any ID or insurance and they claimed they didnt need it so you knocked seven bells out of them, they would happily watch the police arrest you and press charges using the courts of the society they are not part of.

Amazing.

I'm floored by some defenses used. "I'm not going to get into an accident, therefore I don't need your insurance" or "If I have an accident I will pay for it" (good luck with that one). Instead of playing ball with everyone else, they feel that they're making a stand for their supposedly repressed rights, and in the process ascending to figurative martyrdom.

What -truly- frightens me are the FOTLers that carry firearms. Especially since I hear reasons like "I'm keeping the cops honest" and "This is to defend myself against the cops". Look at how well that worked. Two cops were murdered for a traffic stop by a FOTLer and his son who thought the same exact thing.

Now, I'm all for gun rights, but with that comes a very distinct responsibility to not be a total idiot about it. It follows along with some of the folks who (usually FOTLers or Sovereigns) openly carry intimidating-looking firearms and then give cops a hard time when approached. After the nonsense with the two cops being murdered, I foresee a lot less tolerance for these nutjobs. If you're openly carrying (I'm all for it) be respectful and responsible.

I've seen many, many encounters where the cops were being quite respectful and polite, and the gun-nut was being a complete jerk to them, nearly instigating an incident for refusing to cooperate. If you're packing and a cop asks for ID, do us all a favor and fork it over. The sooner the cop clears you as not having a warrant out on your head, the sooner he leaves you alone. But no. Instead of playing ball, they refuse to cooperate and then loudly wonder why they suddenly have half a dozen armed policemen on the scene.

Interestingly, freemen have taken a page from the concealed (firearm) carry community whose members justify armed self defense when threatened with bodily harm.

Freemen have a new trick in their charades in which they sit in their cars at traffic stops and no matter how polite and patience the officer is they opine (often for their video cameras) that they feel threatened.

Inexplicably, a few freemen at traffic stops have called emergency services voicing their phony fear. On one occasion Brian Alexander of Kamloops B.C. Canada left the emergency operator with the impression he was being kidnapped by unknown assailants. The fact was he didn’t recognize the police as having legitimate authority and using “freeman speak” made it sound like he didn’t know that the cops were cops.

Needless to say the emergency responders who rushed to the scene were pretty pissed and Alexander got charged with making a false emergency call in addition to his speeding and failure to comply rap.

I'm not certain if this has been posted:

In brief, Darren Murray Clifford, who is Dean Clifford's brother, is tazered, arrested, and in court advances the usual mix of Freeman concepts.

The judge sends him for psychological examination, but naturally he doesn't consent to that.

Chaetognath

Thanks for the article - so what happened in July?

Also if he is claiming to be a non-resident of Canada where can they deport him to? lol

Unfortunately people who follow/laugh at this nonsense have seen most of the hilarious poop these morons get up to.

Rob lost his place as King of Fools when a gullible idiot's mother posted video of her son getting Tasered in Court.

Apologies if I'm talking about the article you linked to, (weather is hurting my intertubes), but watch the video. It's the most amazing FOTL "success story" to date.

Maybe JB can help find the vid.

Man, that's hilarious. The law really should be amended so that as soon as someone starts trying Footle arguments, they get one warning to stop, then the Taser.
